"Okay, so what the hell happened?" John B fires the question the second we tie back up at the dock, his voice way too loud for how wrecked I already feel.

"Someone tried to kill us," I groan, holding my ribs like that might help.

"What? Why? That doesn't make sense," Pope says.

"Obviously they were going after the same thing we were right?" John B said.

"That amulet was worth something. That old man is keeping some secret," Cleo said.

But I couldn't focus on anything. My heart's racing. My skin's buzzing. Everything feels wrong, some low, insistent alarm bell ringing under my ribs that I can't fully place.

"Hey— hey, are you okay?" John B asks, noticing the way I'm hunched over.

Then it slams into me like a truck.
"Shit— John B." I try to breathe. It hurts, a deep, twisting ache spreading fast through my joints. "The bends."

"Did you take your safety stop?" Pope asks JJ.

"I'm gonna say it one more time. Someone was trying to kill us," JJ snaps.

"No, we didn't! We need to get to the hospital— now!" I yell, the pain boiling up my spine, sharp enough to steal the breath right out of me.

"We need to go now!" Pope echoes, grabbing JJ while Kie helps steady him.

"Nice and easy. You're okay, you've just got a couple bubbles in your blood," John B says as he and Cleo pull me toward the van, his voice trying for calm even though I can hear the fear underneath it.

"No shit, Sherlock," I groan.

"Come on, John B!" Cleo shouts.

"I'm going!" he says, waving through traffic.

"Hey watch out watch out," Pope warned.

"Deep breaths, deep breaths. John B can you please go faster," Kie pleads.

"Who was down there with you guys?" Pope asks.

"No idea, Pope. But you guys are not gonna believe this...." I manage to unwrap the cloth and hand the amulet to Kie, my hands shaking with pain and adrenaline both.

"What is that?" Cleo asks.

"You found it?" Kie gasps.

"Holy shit. That's the thing he was looking for?"

"Holy shit— holy shit. Why didn't you tell us sooner?" John B asks.

"I'm busy dying!" I yell, the pain sharpening every word.

"You're a rockstar girl," Cleo tries to soothe.

It feels like hours before we get there. They rush us inside immediately — JJ and I get shoved into this tube thing with red lights that buzz faintly, and even that sound feels like it's drilling into my teeth, my whole nervous system already too raw to handle it.
