John b and I are still running when the sirens get closer- way too close. My eyes catch a sign in front of a house, Rose's face and name smiling back at me.
"We can hide in here." I tell John b, sprinting toward the porch.
"You sure this place is empty?" John B asks, breathless.
"Yeah. It's my mom's listing" I said.
The sirens swell again and my heart kicks into overdrive. I punch in the code with shaking fingers.
"Zero two one five. My dad's birthday." I said, and the lock beeps, I snatch the key.
"Let's check this street. They can't be far." A cop says- so close it makes me flinch.
"Shit. Come on. Come on" I whisper, ramming the key into the lock.
"Go" John urges.
We slip inside, shutting the door behind us. Both of us lean against it like we can hold the whole world out.
"Nothin' here. Check the porch. I got this one. You go check next door." One cop says
"Shh" john b whispers.
"Okay will do." The cop replies. "I'll go around back." He added.
A heavy knock rattles the door, then footsteps fade.
"All right... He's probably headed over to the Cut." The cop said
"Let's go. Let's go. Come on. Let's go upstairs." John b whispers.
I peek out the window just in time to see Rafe and Kelce walking down the street.
"Hurry up! This way!" Rafe shouts
"I can't believe that's my brother." I mumble
"They're headed to the cut" Rafe said "Let's go down Banks Road" Kelce adds as they run off.
Upstairs, we collapse on the bed. I point to the ceiling, the glow in the dark stars shining.
"Wow" John B breathes
"Sweet, right?" I say
"Yeah. Hey did you know the uh... The bottom two stars in the Little Dipper point to the-" he started
"The North Star? Yeah. That's the center point. What everything else spins around." I finish
A dog barks outside. A man yells. John b perks up, gasping.
"Sh sh sh." I pull him back down. "It's okay. It's okay. I've got you." I said
"Could you remind me of the happy ending?" He whispers
"Yeah. We're gonna meet the crew at the dock tomorrow." I said
