I groan as my eyes start to open, the room spinning in slow, dizzy circles.

My chest feels heavy. My stomach aches like someone lit a fire beneath my skin, dull and insistent, pulsing in time with my heartbeat.

I push myself upright, confused when I don't see John B or the doctor anywhere, the empty room somehow more frightening than any of the chaos before it.

A thick white patch is taped across my stomach. The place the bullet tore through me.

I slide off the metal table, unsteady, my legs threatening to give out beneath me, and walk toward the voices down the hallway.

John B and the doctor are sitting in a small room, mid-conversation.

The second the doctor sees me, he shoots up from his chair.

"Whoa little lady! You need to go lie down."

"How long did I sleep?" My voice comes out scratchy, unfamiliar in my own throat.

"Not long enough." John B is already sprinting to me, his hands finding my shoulders like he needs to check I'm still real.

"Can we still make it?"

"No. No. We... It's over. Okay?"

"No it's not." Something stubborn and fierce rises up in me even through the fog.

"Stella—"

"We still have an hour."

"You need to rest. You just got shot, star."

"I am fine. We're going."

There's a moment where he almost argues.

Almost.

But instead, he nods and slips his arm around me, and I feel the tension in his grip, the way he's holding back everything he wants to say.

"Seriously star you shouldn't be standing."

"I'm fine."

"Okay. Relax." A small, disbelieving smile tugs at his mouth despite everything.

When we reach the doorway, the sound of sirens slices through the air, and my whole body goes tense at the noise. Cops stand outside, talking to people.

"Shit. Are you kidding me?" John B mutters.

"You guys got a little heat on you don't you? I've been there and I've done that. But I got an idea." The doctor tosses John B a pair of keys.
"Friend of the devil is a friend of mine."

"Thanks Doc."

I snatch the keys before John B even finishes reaching for them, my body moving faster than my brain wants it to.

"Oh dear," the doctor mumbles.

"Let's go," I tell John B.

"Okay. All right." He ushers me toward the car, his hand steady at the small of my back.
