There's a moment where all of us just stand there staring at the maze of a steel tracks stretching into forever, and it hits me- we're really doing this. Again. And somehow it feels heavier this time. Maybe because everything does lately.
"There's like 1,000 trains here" Kie mutters.
"Well we know it's car 750X on the track to Raleigh" Pope says, already studying like he has a math test.
"Yeah so now we just gotta find it" JJ adds
"But the problem is. We're not getting out of here unnoticed with a giant cross" I said
"We won't have to. We can nab it somewhere further in the country. Just gotta figure out how to stop the train." Pope says
"Right" Kie echoes
"Leave that to me" JJ says, sounding way to confident.
"How you gonna do that?" Cleo asks
JJ shrugs. "I got an uncle up in New Bern right? When he got tipsy he'd just throw an old chain across the tracks just for shits and giggles. And that old little chain would stop all the train traffic in coastal Carolina." He said
"A chain?" Kie repeats
"He's actually right. There's a low-voltage current that runs across all rail tracks. Throw a chain on it, you close that circuit. It would read as another train. Crossing lights come down. Science is actually pretty sound." Pope says
JJ beams. "Science. I knew my science." He said
"I'm glad you know your science JJ but we don't have a chain" Kie says
"No, but..... I bet Topper's dad has jumper cables in the truck. Would that work?" I ask
"Yeah" Pope nods
God help us all.
"What's going on?" Topper yells from the truck. "Are we doing this?" He asks
"All right you all wait here. Me and Pope will go look for it and send a signal once we find it." Cleo says
"Do we actually have a plan right now?" Kie asks
"Think we do." JJ grins proudly.
"That's impressive" Sarah says
"I'm proud of us guys" I add- but there's a flicker of dread under my ribs. Because things never stay this smooth.
"Let's not jinx it. Come on." Pope said
"Nobody ever listens to me" Cleo mutters.
We wait, shivering with impatience until a beam of light flashes down the tracks.
"That's it. We're green." Kie says- but immediately a train horn blares.
