The second we got home I was already moving — straight to Dad's office, heart going faster than my feet, pulling the desk drawer open before I'd fully thought through what I was going to say if someone asked me why.

"What are you doin'?"

I jumped hard enough to knock my elbow on the drawer, a sharp jolt of pain shooting up to my funny bone.

Dad stood in the doorway.

"I just—" I straightened. Smiled. Too wide, my heart still hammering from the jump. "Wanted a copy of one of the old plat maps."

"A plat map." He raised an eyebrow. "Of Tannyhill."

"Yeah." I kept the smile going. Internally catastrophizing, running through excuses faster than I could vet them.

"You never wanted to look at those when I tried to show them to you."

"Well, since then I've become so deeply appreciative of this beautiful property that we call home," I said, gaining momentum, the words tumbling out faster than I meant them to, "and they're really just so beautiful, and I thought maybe I could get them framed? For my room?"

Dad looked at me for a long moment, and I made myself hold his gaze even though every part of me wanted to look away.

"Okay, come on. Is this a school thing?" he asked.

"It's July."

"A Topper thing?"

"Definitely not a Topper thing." I shook my head firmly. Then, because it was going to come out eventually anyway, and something in my chest wanted to say it out loud: "but it is a boy thing."

"A boy thing," he repeated.

"He's a real go-getter. I think you'll like him."

Dad's expression shifted — less suspicious, more curious. "Who is this mystery history buff? He a cartographer or something?"

I opened the office door slowly, feeling a small, warm secret settle into my chest. "I could tell you..." I turned back with a smile. "But then he wouldn't be a mystery."

"Hey!" he called.

I poked my head back in.

"Make good choices," he said.

"I will."

"Be careful with that."

I pressed a kiss to the rolled-up map before I'd fully decided to do it, some giddy impulse moving through me faster than sense. "Promise. Thank you — you're the best!" I yelled, already down the hall, my feet lighter than they'd been all evening.

The Hawk's Nest was all dark wood and salt air and moonlight, and John B was already up there when I arrived, which meant I had approximately three seconds to pull myself together before he saw me.
