5 - The Death Compass

Sarah and I decided to sleep on the boat since it was the only place with air conditioning. I was half-asleep when I heard a clanging noise- the sound of metal hitting something.

"Wheezie, shut up" I mumbled.

But when I opened my eyes, it wasn't Wheezie. It was John B, standing there with the scuba tanks in his hands.

"You're not Wheezie." I said.

"Correct. Sorry." He said, caught red handed.

Sarah sat up next to me, blinking the sleep from her eyes.
"What are you doing?" She asked.

"Uh... I'm just dropping off some scuba gear" he said, trying way too hard to sound casual.
"What are... what are you doing... here?" He asked awkwardly.

"It's our boat" Sarah said flatly.

"It's also the only place with air conditioning" I added.

"Right." He mumbled, shifting awkwardly.

"Did you um... top up the tanks?" Sarah asked.

"Uh- no, no, the powers down so the compressors were off" he said.

"So you're sneaking onto our boat at 5:00 a.m. with empty tanks? I'll make sure to tell Ward." Sarah said.

"I'm just gonna drop these off" he said quickly, setting down the tanks.

"Yeah, middle of the room's fine." I said, smirking.

"Yeah, this is pretty much what he told me to do" John B said.

"Yep, bye" I said, trying not to laugh.

"Bye" Sarah added.

He started to walk out but the turned back.
"Actually you know what... what exactly were you gonna tell your dad?" He asked.

"Nothing much. Just that you poached our scuba gear." Sarah said with a little smile.

"Okay, fuck. I borrowed it for a few hours.
Okay? And then I brought it back intact and unharmed" he said

"Minus air" Sarah said.

"Look please don't tell him. Okay? He'll fire me" John B said.

"What are you gonna do? Pull a gun on me?"
Sarah teased.

"Ha, that was a good one" I laughed, giving her a fist bump.
