JJ bursts through the doors, fighting off the cops as he stumbles down the steps and hits the ground hard.
Everything happens at once.
We all take off running.
"JJ!" I yell, pushing through bodies, my heart slamming against my ribs.
They get him before we can.
I watch as they shove him into the back of the police car. "JJ!" I scream, trying to run over to him.
Then someone climbs onto the roof of the car. And shatters the glass.
We rush forward, grabbing JJ by the arms, pulling him through the broken window.
"JJ you gotta go! Go! Run run!" We yell
He doesn't hesitate. He takes off down the street.
We all hair stand there, breathing hard, watching him disappear down the road.
My chest feels tight. Like something just snapped and didn't come back.
"Come on, let's go, let's go. He's heading downtown" John b says
We take off running again.
By the time we reach downtown, it's already chaos.
Windows smashed. Cars overturned. Sparks flying from busted power lines.
The air smells like smoke and metal and something burned.
The riots just getting started.
"Do yall see him?" Kie asks, spinning in a circle.
"No" John b and pope said.
"Where is he?" I ask, my voice sounding smaller than I wanted to.
"I don't know" John b mumbles
My stomach twists. I hate not knowing where he is.
"I think I know where he's going guys. Follow me follow me" John b says suddenly
We run again.
We stop in front of a house with shattered windows. I don't even need to think about it. I already know whose house it is.
Shoupes out front with a line of cops.
"Shoupe Shoupe Shoupe, he's not gonna do anything" pope says quickly.
A cop shoves him back.
"All right JJ! This is what I was talking about son! You've gone too far and we got a serious situation! I told you this shit would happen and here we are! I need you to put down any and all weapons you may have or you will get shot. And I don't want that. Just come on out with your hands up. JJ listen up son" Shoupe's voice booms through the microphone.
