Ray recognised the bared teeth behind the hypocritical grin and the monster behind the mask, which was now nothing more than gaping cracks.

The doctor's arm twitched, slid backwards, and reached for something.

"Weapon!" screamed Ryker's mind as he remembered the shots.

His first instinct was to duck and dive to the side. That way, he might still be able to avoid the bullet. But... he couldn't!

Behind him on the floor lay Evelyn—unconscious and unable to escape the shot. If he dodged, she would undoubtedly be hit.

"Shit!"

He had to make a decision.

NOW!

Against all logic, against every instinct and everything he had been taught, Ryker lunged forward. He closed the gap between himself and the sick bastard just in time as the doctor pulled the gun from his waistband and pointed the gleaming metal at him.

Ryker closed his hand around Jonathan's wrist, pushing his arm up, away from him, away from Eve—just in time.

WHAM!

The shot echoed through the night, but the bullet was lost in the darkness.

His ears rang, and a sharp pain throbbed in his skull. The trauma stirred inside him. Something wanted to curl up and protect itself, but the sight of Eve stood like a wall between him and collapse. Her face... her blue lips.

Growling with rage, Ryker tightened his grip and fought the doctor's tension for a moment before his wrist gave way and fell backwards.

The gun clattered to the floor. Instinctively, Ryker kicked it. It slid a few feet across the rough stone floor before coming to rest. It was now out of his reach—for now.

Ryker was too late to notice the next movement until a shadow appeared in his field of vision. A dull pain exploded in his side as the doctor's fist struck the spot just below his rib cage.

Something cracked. Ray could feel it in his body: how the blow hit him, shook his muscles, and forced the air out of his lungs. The edges of his vision blurred, his grip loosened.
