Eve fought her way through the thicket, her limbs heavy and aching. The thorns and branches dug into her skin, tearing and scratching her. But this pain was nothing compared to what she had been through in the last few hours. Her skin was bloody and scratched, and darkness surrounded her.

Her semi-blind vision made her escape even more difficult. It was a miracle that he hadn't caught up with her yet—perhaps she had injured him badly enough to give herself a chance?

There was a crack somewhere, and Eve felt an icy thorn of panic pierce her heart—but she kept running. Her thoughts were solely focused on Liam. She had to save him and get him to safety from Jonathan. If she could somehow make it to the city, they would both be saved. If not... Liam might be able to hide long enough.

"He can't find him."

"I have to buy him time."

Time was all that mattered. All that could turn this situation around. Ray wasn't an idiot. Eve was sure he would realise what was going on as soon as he returned and that he would search for her with the police.

The trees rushed past her. Blurred shapes—not just because her eyes had never adjusted quickly to the darkness. They stood there like silent witnesses to her desperate escape.

The forest was dense, and the darkness of the night seemed to suffocate her. Her feet were heavy, her steps uncertain as she fought her way through the undergrowth and over the uneven ground. Her lungs were already burning from the effort, but Eve forced herself to keep running.

Further, further...

She knew that every step was crucial and that every second of her escape was taking that bastard further away from Liam.

But the mere thought of Jonathan following her through this dark forest made her pulse race. Since the first shot, he had fired two or three more. Surely just to scare her and flush her out. Thanks to her husband, Eve knew very well that the chance of successfully hitting her with a pistol in the middle of the night in such a dense forest was far too slim. Nevertheless, she didn't want to take any chances!
