Ryker ran through the forest. He pushed himself deeper and deeper in the direction Liam's trembling hand had pointed before leaving Dylan behind with the rifle and his child.

He had long since lost all sense of time as the dark silhouettes of the trees rushed past him. He stumbled several times, staggered, and caught himself again. How many pills had he taken by now? Too many, judging by his blurred vision and the dull throbbing that made his limbs tremble. Nevertheless, he forced himself to keep going.

Every second seemed to pass incredibly quickly and yet last forever. Was it minutes? Fifteen minutes?

It didn't matter.

All that mattered was getting to Eve in time. Finding her, protecting her, and bringing her back to Liam unharmed. He had to be faster than that madman.

Nothing could happen to her. She couldn't die.

Liam couldn't lose his mother... And he didn't want to think about finding only Eve's cold body. The thought alone turned his stomach.

"Nothing can happen to her... nothing can happen to her!" The phrase echoed in his head like a mantra.

This sentence echoed in his head like a mantra. He forced his burning body to keep going. He let his feet fly across the ground as the cold night wind blew through his sweater and pierced his skin like icy needles. Sweat dripped from his forehead into his eyes, but he didn't stop.

"I'll find you! I'll find you!"

Ray had to keep telling himself that to dispel his own dark thoughts. He couldn't stop. Every minute and every second he wasted could be Eve's last breath. He would never forgive himself if anything happened to Evelyn.

"Let me go!" The scream cut through the night like a knife through soft butter. He had to be loud, desperate.

He pushed himself against the trees like a wave, which absorbed most of the force and broke the desperate cries as if they were dark cliffs.

How far away was it? Ryker tried to estimate the distance, but the density of the forest made it difficult. It sounded distant, yet so clear, as if he were right in front of him.
