The distance seemed endless until they finally pressed themselves against the façade.

Thump. Thump.

His heartbeat sounded like gunshots in his ears. Loud and threatening, drowning out everything else.

Then they moved toward the destroyed door, listening intently for any movement inside the house.

But it remained silent.

Far too silent.

Thud. Thud.

The moment had come.

Ryker signalled to Dylan, then raised his rifle, leaned to the side, and aimed the barrel inside. That one second seemed like an eternity.

"For everything holy..."

Ray felt his hands grow clammy. At the same time, a bucket of cold water was poured over him.

Shards lay scattered on the floor like fallen warriors, mixed with the sticky remains of a dark stew. The silver pot lay on its side, seemingly smeared with blood. Chairs had been knocked over, and Ray immediately recognised a bullet hole with crumbling plaster on one wall. It looked like a battlefield.

His eyes darted around, his heart pounding in his chest as if it wanted to jump out just like he did. But it was quiet... and no one was to be seen.

"G-d secured," Ray managed to say, hearing how fragile his voice sounded. Slowly, he ventured forward to make room for Dylan. Just a second later, he also heard Dylan take a sharp breath.

The floorboards creaked beneath their feet as if they wanted to betray the intruders. Shards crunched under their footsteps, and the remains of the stew oozed out from under their soles as they ventured into the scene. Although his heart seemed to beat faster and faster, his grip on the weapon in his hand remained firm and unyielding.

He swung it around every corner and forced himself to breathe calmly. "Ryker... there's blood..." Dylan hissed quietly behind him, and Ryker could hear both anger and concern in his voice. "...at three o'clock, a pot and some shards..." his comrade informed him, causing him to swallow harder. "And..."
