Dylan's gaze darted around, and the SEAL reached for his weapon. In the blink of an eye, he had it cocked and aimed at the thicket. His finger was on the trigger. Calm. As if his pain had suddenly been forgotten. Dylan was ready to shoot.

Ryker's muscles tensed immediately, and his hands also reached for his rifle. His body was tense as a bowstring, his heart pounding in his throat, but he held the weapon like an extension of his own arm.

Was that Taylor? Had their voices led the bastard to them?

Instinctively, Ryker moved to the side to take cover behind one of the broad giant trees. However, his gaze remained fixed on the source of the noise. With narrowed eyes, he tried to make out something in the darkness and discern the movement that would reveal their target.

There was another rustling sound.

Dylan's finger twitched on the trigger as a soft whimper broke the tense silence.

Ryker's eyes widened.

"Stop!" he shouted, lunging forward—right into the line of fire—and rushing toward the sound.

"Ray, what the...!" Dylan's bewildered cry rang out as Ray stumbled into the bushes.

Branches cracked and broke, leaves rustled under his boots, but Ryker hardly noticed.

His feet guided him straight to the whimpering sobs coming from the group of young spruce trees – and sure enough...

On the ground, arms wrapped around his legs, a small figure crouched, trembling all over.

"Liam!"

Liam! It was Liam!

The little man sat trembling between the low-hanging branches of a dense group of young spruce trees in front of him. Sniffling and whimpering, the little boy hardly dared to move, his breath dispersing in white clouds in the dark night. His small hands clawed desperately at his jeans, clinging to them as if his life depended on it.

The boy was in shock, Ryker could see that at first glance. He rocked back and forth, the leaves beneath him rustling softly. That was what had given him away...
