The scream hit Ryker like a punch.
He immediately looked up in the direction it came from.
"Dylan!" The name left his lips in a gasp, and his eyes followed the path his former comrade had disappeared down. Ray immediately sprinted off as if he had been stung by a tarantula.
He plunged so quickly into the thicket that he got his rifle caught for a moment. The strap cut into his shoulder more sharply. Ray grimaced as he pushed his way through the bushes, fighting exhaustion.
"Ray!" Dylan's voice reached his ears.
Leaves rustled as he stumbled through the undergrowth, constantly looking back to make sure he hadn't lost the trail. He kept calling out the other man's name—not loudly, but more like a hiss, so as not to attract too much attention.
"Ryker...!" Finally, a pain-wracked, strained hiss came from the darkness. "Over here..."
Instinctively, he turned his head and saw the dark silhouette crouching on the ground a few steps away.
"I'll kill that crazy bastard if I get my hands on him..." Dylan hissed in the darkness as Ryker hurried over to him. He knelt next to his comrade's huddled form and laid the rifle on the ground beside him.
"Damn it."
Now Ryker saw what Dylan was holding onto—and what had caused the loud cry of pain: Dylan's right leg was caught in an old, rusty bear trap.
The iron teeth had dug mercilessly into the flesh, so that blood was already soaking through the fabric of his pants. But that wasn't the worst of it. His lower leg was bent at an unnatural angle, right where the trap had closed. Dylan's foot was undoubtedly broken. And he was lucky!
"Holy shit..." Ray groaned at the sight. The image sent another cold shiver down his spine. Of course, there were traps left behind here and there in Canada, especially in the vast forests. Ryker noticed at first glance how bad the trap was: it was rusty, and the hinges were squealing and groaning. That had probably saved Dylan's leg. An intact trap could have cost him his entire leg!
