Bam!

The echo of the distant bang reverberated in his ears.

His breath trembled as it passed his lips, and Ryker felt his hands shake. An icy chill ran down his spine. The temperature in the room seemed to drop suddenly, while time seemed to slow down.

Paralysing fear mixed with rising panic.

No!

As if it were his lifeline, his trembling hands clenched tighter around the barrel of the rifle. His grip was so tight that he could feel his hands shaking uncontrollably as his heart pounded in his throat.

Across from him, Dylan's eyes were wide open. He stared at him as if he had seen a ghost. Pure fear flickered through his chestnut-brown eyes, then they darkened abruptly, and the SEAL let out a dark growl. The muscles under his patterned jacket tensed, his fists clenched—and Ryker felt himself being grabbed by the shoulder and pushed aside.

"Dylan!" he shouted, finally breaking out of the trance that had gripped him—but it was already too late.

With thunderous steps, Dylan stormed past him into the darkness of the night.

"Shit, damn it!" Ryker cursed. His voice trembled with worry, but he hurried after his comrade, out of the hut and back into the darkness of the night.

He reached Dylan just as he pushed through the first branches, deeper into the forest, without thinking about the consequences, like a bull with a red rag in front of his nose.

"Dylan, stop!" Ray reached out, grabbed the angry man by the shoulder and pulled him back with all his strength.

Dylan stumbled from the unexpected jolt but didn't fall. Luckily, that hadn't been Ray's intention. He just wanted to stop him, slow him down, like he had done so many times before. But instead, Dylan spun around, his teeth bared like an angry animal.

"Let me go, Ray!" he flared up, and his hand shot into the darkness surrounding them like an oppressive, breathtaking thing. It was oppressive and took their breath away. "My wife and son are out there somewhere! You saw for yourself what a sick bastard that guy is! There were shots fired—I can't just stay here! I have to find them! Now!"
