While Dylan was still speaking, Ryker unfolded the papers, leafed through them, and finally looked at Dylan's signature next to Evelyn's. Some of the tension fell from Ryker's shoulders, and he felt the hint of a slight smile touch the corners of his mouth. Evelyn had fought so long to get that signature. All this time, their relationship had been in a difficult situation because the shadow of Eve's old marriage was always there, no matter how bright the light might be.
So much had to happen... but now they could finally start a new chapter. All of them. And Dylan, too, seemed to be finally on the right track by trying to change. Looking up, his gaze fell on the figure a short distance away in the cozy, warm winter coat, waiting at the entrance to the cemetery and seemingly keeping an eye on both men. Ryker's smile grew even wider.
"Change is good," he finally replied in a conciliatory tone. "Believe me, even though I left the service under different circumstances than you... I've learned that there's always a way to move on. To improve ourselves, and... with the right support," he turned halfway around and his gaze returned to Evelyn and Liam, "...we are even strong enough to face our greatest demons." Ryker felt his smile widen at these words and his heart skip a beat—as it always did when he referred to his great love.
Sometimes second chances surprised you by fulfilling you much more than you could ever have dreamed. Still smiling, he turned his attention back to Dylan and nodded subtly at the shadow that had followed the now former SEAL to the cemetery. "And it seems to me that you, too, have found another chance. And you can learn from your mistakes and do better this time."
Dylan followed his gaze, and Ryker didn't miss how a slight blush flushed his face and how he shifted his weight uneasily. "Sally... she needs help at the café... We got along well when I last visited, and now that I've been back there..." Dylan murmured, almost as if it were a secret he didn't want to reveal.
Ryker couldn't help but laugh softly. It just burst out of him like the first spring flowers breaking through the white blanket of snow as he punched Dylan on the shoulder, making him blush even more.
"Do better this time, old friend," Ryker said with a conciliatory smile. It seemed as if they had all found a new path.
In fact, he watched as Dylan also smiled slightly, his gaze fixed on Sally, and nodded tentatively. "Don't worry, I intend to," the dark-haired man replied seriously, yet Ryker could see Dylan's expression visibly break before he pointed to the sheets of paper. "But there's something else. Turn the page."
