Jonathan fixed his eyes on her as if a finger twitched on the trigger. She felt the tension in the air, wrapping around her neck like an invisible noose... She ventured far out onto the brittle ice.
"I just want to make sure that..." Her voice broke, and Eve hoped Jonathan thought she sounded afraid. But hopefully, fearful of her husband so he could feel like the hero he seemed determined to be. "My husband is not stupid," she tried to justify herself without giving too much away.
It was ridiculous. There she was, suddenly feeling a stupid, crazy hope that maybe Ryker and Dylan would come and rescue her. Yes, she wished her husband was still around and hadn't left so that he and Ray could come looking for her and find her before... before...
Eve swallowed hard, but the slimy toad in her throat refused to go away.

Eve tried not to tense up again immediately – with moderate success.
"Don't worry... I've taken precautions in case this beast shows up and tries to take you away from me."
She could feel her legs growing weaker. But not in a positive way, as he wished. In this story, he was not the shining hero.
The danger was what could happen if he realized exactly that fact as well.
"Are you sure?" she repeated almost mechanically, feeling her fingers go cold as they sank a little deeper into Liam's clothing.
"Of course," Jonathan confirmed with a smile.
