The snow crunched softly under his heavy boots, a dull, dry sound that repeated with every step. The sound seemed inappropriately loud in the muffled silence of the winter cemetery, where even the wind paused, as if it did not want to disturb this place. Fresh snowflakes drifted leisurely from the gray sky, slowly, almost sluggishly, settling like a veil over gravestones, withered wreaths, and the dark earth.

Ryker took a deep breath. The cold air burned in his lungs, clear and sharp, as if to keep him awake—or warn him.

He hadn't believed he would ever see his former comrade again. Especially not today and not here. Months had passed since their last meeting in the fall and the chase through the nighttime forest, when everything had come to a head and finally dissolved into blood, screams, and the echo of a gunshot. Dylan was the first to disappear after that. Like a shadow or a ghost, he silently slipped out of their lives as soon as it was all over. And that after he had literally saved Ryker from death and held him above the abyss.

And then – nothing.

No message. No letter. No phone call.

Not even a last glance.

And as harsh as it might sound, Ryker had actually been glad about that. Because Dylan embodied many terrible memories, especially for Evelyn, which they all wanted to leave behind. But at the same time, he owed him his life, because it was Dylan's shot that finally brought the doctor down. It was thanks to Dylan that the damn horror that the psychopath had brought upon the small village and their lives had finally come to an end. Even though Ryker didn't like to admit it, without Dylan, his life and Eve's, and perhaps Liam's and others', would have ended there on the cliffs.

That thought alone still sent a shiver down his spine and even now fueled his nightmares on dark nights. Even now, the thought sent a shiver down his spine, got under his skin, and fueled the nightmares that haunted him on some nights. But unlike in the past, he was no longer alone in facing these shadows.

He had found a family.

Love. Warmth. A place where he could stay.

And he would do anything to protect it.
