It was the night of November 6th, 1983, in Hawkins, Indiana when Judy Hopper - the daughter of town chief, Jim Hopper - got a call. Standing up from the desk in her room, she walked into the kitchen of her trailer home, grabbing the phone off the wall.
"Hoppers House," she answered like she always did.
"Judy? It's Nancy," the person, now Nancy Wheeler, on the other line said. Nancy and Judy had been best pals since practically their birth. Spending most of their time together since their mothers were both housewives and around the same age. Really the only time the two of them weren't friends was when the Hopper family had to move to New York for her fathers new job in 1972.
It was there in New York that her little sister, born the same year as Nancy's brother Mike, would be diagnosed with cancer. Sara went through a long but unfruitful journey through chemo.
Ultimately Sara passed away, along with Jim and his wife's marriage. And Judy's and her mothers relationship. After the death of her youngest daughter, Judy's mother shut down. Judy could remember sitting in the custody courtroom like it was yesterday. Her mother was dead on the inside and it showed. Their was no more fight in. No more love for Judy or for Jim.
So, with Judy and Jim being left to the Hopper name, they moved back to Hawkins in 1979. Nancy's mom was the first one to welcome them back. Word traveled fast in the small town so it wasn't long until everyone knew about the death of the young child and the mother that left her only other living child to her father, which was unheard of. But none of that mattered much to the young Judy, given that she was finally reunited with her one and only best friend, Nancy. During those few years left in her youth, Judy had Nancy to fill the void that Sara and her mother left behind. That void reappeared in Judy's soul as she got older but Nancy stayed by her side for most of it, so everything was a okay. Kind of.
Making their way into middle school, the two would become the top students of their class. Every year. They were a duo no one could come between. Other friends were able to join their soiree, of course, really just Barbra Holland out of anyone else, but Nancy and Judy were ride or die.
"Did you finish the Chem worksheet?" Nancy questioned.
"Not yet. I'm still working on history."
"Well, if you do it tonight, can you show me in the morning? I don't know what I'm doing."
Hearing the worry in her voice, Judy grew a small smile. Her friend was always worried about her grades, even though being an academic scholar was basically in her DNA. "Yeah, I'll show you tomorrow."
Halfway into her reply, Judy heard Nancy say, "Hang on, Judy," and set down the phone.
After a few seconds, Nancy picked back up the phone. "Okay."
"What happened?" Judy questioned.
"It was Dustin," Annoyance was apparent in Nancy's voice, but Judy loved Dustin and his toothless face. "Aw, what did he want?"
