Judy woke up the next day and immediately thought of Nancy and Jonathan. Today they would figure out how to find the monster in the photograph, but only after Will's funeral. If that's what you could even call it. If Will wasn't actually dead, like Jonathan said, the only people who knew would have to watch as they lowered 'Will' into the ground.
That made it strange to get dressed in black. The only thing Judy had that was suitable for a funeral was the dress she got for her own sisters. It still somehow fit even though she hadn't worn it in 5 years. Her sister's pale body lying in the hospital bed flashed in her mind. It would happen every so often, but Judy used all her strength to push those dreadful memories away.
Standing next to Nancy and her family, over the casket, Judy looked around for her father. He hadn't been at the house when she left and he still wasn't anywhere she could see him. She could understand not wanting to be at a child's funeral but he was the town Chief, he still had to make an appearance, especially for Joyce Byers.
As everyone said their goodbyes once the service was over, Judy and Nancy drifted off to the side, not speaking to one another, but just waiting. They watched as Jonathan stood awkwardly next to his mother, shaking some hands and accepting a few stiff hugs. Eventually, he was let loose and tried to sneak away towards the two girls.
With an exchange of quiet hellos, the three moved behind a set of tombstones, sitting down on the cold grass. Judy took out a piece of paper she'd been clinging to in her coat pocket. Sitting in the middle of Nancy and Jonathan, she held it out in the middle and they both leaned in closer. It was a plot map of Hawkins, something she took from her fathers filing cabinet. Not soon after she got home the night before, she'd put an X where the monster was definitely at.
"This is where we know it's been, right?" She said, looking at the two of them. "Steve's house, where they found Will's bike, and your house."
Jonathan had looked back up at her, nodding in agreement. "They're all so close." He said.
Judy nodded back. "Exactly. It's all within a mile or something. Whatever this thing is... it's not traveling far."
"You wanna go out there?" Nancy asked.
"I don't know. I- I was looking through the files my dad had and they weren't even close to figuring out that these attacks are so close together. I just think we might find something."
Nancy looked at Judy with a look of determination, but nothing was sure, nothing was safe. Not anymore. "And if we do see it... then what?"
"We kill it," Jonathan said. Like it was that simple.
Judy stood up first, folding the paper back and shoving it in her pocket. She looked down at Jonathan and Nancy while dusting off the back of her coat.
"I'll be at your house in an hour, alright?"
"Yeah," Said Nancy, who then looked at Jonathan. "I'll be ready."
Coming back to her house, Hoppers' car still wasn't there. She couldn't understand where he could be that he would miss at least stopping by the funeral. That was until she opened the door and found her father sweating and heaving heavy breathes, looking like a raging lunatic.
