As night fell on Hawkins, the group of seven picked up their pace to try to find the snack-sized gate in question. Judy had no desire to go through a gate. None of them had anything to defend themselves, and she didn't like the idea of them going in there empty-handed. She felt like she was going insane. Was she the only person that remembered what the creatures from the Upside Down had done to people? The closer they got, the more anxious she became.
"Why are you and lover boy fighting?" Eddie asked Judy as the group walked back through the woods.
"I don't think that's any of your business, Eddie," Judy said, keeping her flashlight on the ground to see where they stepped.
"Maybe not, but I'm a licensed therapist," he replied without any hint of sarcasm, but Judy could see that familiar mischievous glint in his eyes. "You can tell me."
In fact she knew she could. Those Thursday night duels usually turned into Judy ordering her, Dustin and Eddie pizza. They'd sit around and laugh for a few more hours after the other party members left.
They shared without vanity or embarrassment.
In their own way, the three of them were outcast.
Eddie wasn't regular - normal - and that made the plain people of Hawkins steer clear of him.
Dustin had never made much appeal to people to be his friend. Even though, if they really saw him and his kind nature and quick whirred smarts, they'd love him just as much as any other person.
And Judy... She was a town pariah, too. Abandoned by her own mother, sister to a cancer victim, and fatherless, adopted by a hypochondriac woman who loved her son just a little too much.
People didn't talk to Judy, or Dustin, or Eddie. So they talked to each other.
Judy and Eddie had known each other since the eighth grade. Judy was his math tutor of course, but they were cordial nonetheless.
It wasn't until Dustin joined the Hellfire club that Judy saw how charismatic Eddie was. He was animated and funny, but also very sweet.
She never saw him in school - she figured he was skipping - but those few Thursday nights the past couple of months gave her a good friend indeed.
Judy sighed, going into a whisper, "Someone may or may not have said his ex's name while we made out in his car."
"Wait," Eddie thought for a moment, looking ahead of him at the others, "that Nancy," he pointed in front of him to the back of Nancy's head. "His ex-girlfriend and your ex-best friend?"
"Yeah."
"Woah. That's bad." Eddie hung his mouth open, trying to find the words. "How much longer will you give him the silent treatment?"
"Don't know yet. I'm starting to feel like, in the grand scheme of things, I should spend my last moments not being mad at him."
"'Last moments'? You sound so cynical," Eddie smiled at Judy, finding it humorous how dark she could be sometimes. "But I would agree, Hopper. Give him at least an hour more of silence and then talk to him. String him for what he's worth."
