"Are you sure you'll be okay by yourself?" Judy asked Steve before she unbuckled her seatbelt. The two sat in his car in front of the Hopper cabin after dropping Dustin back off at his house. The three of them couldn't say a word the entire car ride. They were thinking too much too speak.
"Yeah, I should be fine," he sighed, giving Judy a sympathetic smile. "It's a lot to figure out in one day, but let's just worry about it tomorrow."
"Yeah," Judy agreed, unconvincingly. "Russians... in Hawkins... it's probably just some cruel prank, or something."
Judy finally unbuckled herself, holding onto her bag that laid on the floorboard at her feet. She looked at Steve and he watched her carefully. Like he'd been watching her the entire time.
Judy paused for a few long seconds. He studied her, allowing his eyes to linger on her worried eyes and her quiet lips. Another second and she might've burst.
He stared with an open mouth and she couldn't figure out if he was trying to speak or catch his breath. Why would he be breathing so hard? And why was her heart beating out of her chest?
The silence buzzed louder in the car with each passing second of quiet emotion.
He didn't say anything and this time it was Judy's turn to stare. Steve cleared his throat and looked out of his window at the cabin. Judy studied his tense jaw and his eyes squeezed shut. He looked like he was fighting something but after a deep breath and a short sniffle, he was back to warm and bubbly Steve.
"You should get inside," he said, plainly. "Don't want your dad to think I'm holding you hostage."
Judy was still stuck in that silent moment. Stuck on his lingering gaze, his enchanting gaze. That was always a problem for her. He'd look at her and she'd willingly follow him to the ends of the world. It was so simple for him to look away, but she held her whole heart in his eyes, his mouth and his hands.
She was so enamored and he just wanted to make sure she made it safely inside. How pathetic was she?
Judy looked down for a quick moment before giving Steve a courtesy smile and opening the door. The stoic summer was nearly suffocating as she lingered until she closed the cabin door behind her, welcoming the warm homey feeling it exhumed.
As she looked around the house, Judy saw Hopper asleep in his recliner. He always watched detective shows and fell asleep within the first ten minutes. It was pretty late in the night, though.
Els light still showed from under her door. And it was shut all the way, something Hopper didn't allow if someone was over.
Setting her bag down quietly in her room, so as to not wake up her visibly tired father, Judy walked over to her sister's door. Knocking just light enough to where she couldn't say that she didn't knock. El didn't have a hold of the handle as Judy turned it and was surprised to see that it wasn't Mike in her room.
