That next morning Judy woke up without Max on her lap. Startled, Judy raced up the stairs, catching Mr. Wheeler off guard.
He looked at her perplexed as she adjusted her shirt and cleared her throat, moving awkwardly through the kitchen until she found Max at the table.
"Couldn't sleep?" Judy said, repeating herself once Max took off her headphones covering her ears.
"No."
"You should've woken me up so you didn't have to be up here by yourself."
"Morning, sweetie," Mrs. Wheeler said, brightly, walking into the kitchen.
"Morning."
"Hey, Judy?"
"Yeah?" She looked back at Mrs. Wheeler.
"I just wanted to say it's really nice to have you and Nancy having a sleepover again. It's been a long time," the woman smiled kindly.
"Yeah, we're both just busy nowadays. Still friends, of course," Judy lied. So, Nancy didn't tell her mother they weren't speaking anymore?
"Yeah, growing up will do that to you. Well, get ready, the pancakes are almost ready," she cheered.
Looking back around, Max had started coloring again. Holly sat next to her as well, but wasn't drawing as intricate a picture as Max was.
"Is this what you saw last night?" Judy said looking at all the red drawings Max did.
"I mean, it's supposed to be. I thought it'd be easier to draw it out than to explain it, but... not so much. It was like a dream. A nightmare."
"You think Vecna's just trying to scare you?"
"With Billy? Yeah. But when I made it here..." Max looked around her pages. "I dunno, something was different. He seemed surprised, almost. Like he didn't want me there."
"Maybe you infiltrated his mind," Dustin said from behind them, bringing a stack of pancakes to the table and drenching them in syrup. "He invaded your mind, right? Is it that big a leap to suggest you somehow wound up in his?"
The two girls looked at him perplexed.
"Just... think about it. What if you somehow unlocked a backdoor to Vecna's world? Like, maybe the answer we're looking for is somewhere in this incredibly vague drawing."
"God, we need Will," Judy joked and Max smiled. "No shit. But I tried them again this morning, and it's the same busy signal."
Looking at her watch, Judy had an epiphany. "I'd be getting off my plane by now, maybe they're at the airport."
"You didn't tell them you weren't going?" Dustin asked.
"I couldn't get a hold of anyone, not even on Cerebro. And what would I say to El? That it's all happening again? She couldn't handle that." Judy looked down, fidgeting with one of the drawings. Her eyebrows came together as she flipped the paper right side up. "Is this a window?"
