Nancy was about to rub a hole in the floor pacing back and forth. Judy had never seen her so worried about Mike before. Though she could understand why now was different from before. There was an alien on the loose and the lab on the edge of the town seemingly harbored little kids with special powers.
Nancy was the first to run out of the front door as a car door opened and slammed shut, Judy walked out with Jonathan to see the brat pack hopping out of Hopper's truck. A bald girl stalked behind Mike as they walked up to the house.
"Oh, my God, Mike! I was so worried about you," Nancy said, hugging her brother. He looked frazzled at her. But she quickly turned her attention to the girl behind him. "Is that my dress?" she asked.
The bald girl turned out to be named Eleven, El for short. She never stopped looking like a deer in the headlights, and spoke very few words. Judy knew how awkward it was to be ogled but she couldn't really look away. Something about her seemed so broken, and she had only really just begun to live. Even as Mike explained what the 'Upside Down' was, the young girl, El, flinched at any mention of the demogorgon, which had also now been named.
"A gate," said El, after Dustin mentioned the only way to get to the Upside Down was through a rip of time and space.
"That we tracked to be Hawkins Lab," Lucas added. "With our compasses."
Everyone above the age of 12 looked at the small children confused, granting an eye roll from Dustin. "Okay, so the gate has a really strong electromagnetic field, and that can change the directions of a compass needle," he said it like it was common sense.
"Is this gate underground?" Hopper asked, looking at El.
"Yes," she whispered back.
"Near a large water tank?"
"How do you know all that?" Judy wondered, thinking about where he'd been while she was worrying about the demogorgon.
"He's seen it," Mike said.
"Is there any way that you could... that you could reach Will? That you could talk to him in the Upside Down?" Joyce asked El while touching her hand. The girl widened her eyes at the sudden contact.
"And my friend Barbara? Can you find her, too?" Nancy asked too. And as much as El appeared to not want to, and almost looked scared to, she got ready with a walkie talkie that Mike had set to a dead channel. Everyone circled around the table as El closed her eyes, sitting as still as she could. The static sound coming from the walkie swelled and faded for a few long minutes, until a sharp cut out. The lights flickered before El opened her eyes and the blood began to run underneath her nose.
"I'm sorry," her voice broke. "I can't find them."
The group could only stare at her as she slowly got up from her chair and went into the hallway, disappearing into the bathroom. No one could say much. They'd all been hoping for a sign from Barb or Will, or even both. Just a little something would've been enough.
