Days after her visit with Steve, the news was slammed with Barb's "story". How she was exposed to an experimental chemical that had leaked from the grounds of Hawkins lab. A funeral had been arranged for Barb two days after the news broke out. Judy suspected that all the arrangements from when she first went missing never left the Holland's minds.
As much as it brought Judy and Nancy relief that Barb could finally be laid to rest, they knew it wasn't the truth. And standing behind Mr. and Mrs. Holland as they wept for their daughter at her funeral only made that reality harsher.
But, with Steve by her side, Judy had someone to hold on to. He let her cling to the arm of his black coat as the ceremony went on. And Nancy clung to Jonathan just the same. The four of them didn't really speak to each other at the funeral. There wasn't much to say. Jonathan and Nancy were together now, Steve knew that. And Judy and Steve were closer than ever, Nancy knew that.
There was no bad blood. Only a summer of new memories to make right in front of them. Even El had bigger and better things to look up to this time around. Legally she was now Jane Hopper, daughter of Jim Hopper. The story that would go around town would be that she was a distant cousin of Judys and her parents unfortunately passed away. With her only other relative being Jim, he adopted her. The three of them, Judy, El and Hopper laughed anytime someone brought it up. It was just humorous how things seemed to all work out in the end, even when the time it took to get there was nearly treacherous.
Hopper was hesitant to let El go to the Hawkins Middle School Snow Ball. It would be her first time out in public and she'd be around kids and adults who had never seen her before, so he was scared. Rightfully so, but Judy was able to convince him that this would be a good start. She'd be with her friends, Dustin, Lucas, Will and Mike. They looked out for El just like Hopper did. And El really wanted to go.
Judy had never seen someone so excited about something so cheesy before. Even as she sat next to Judy in the cab of Hopper's police truck on the way to the school, she was still smiling and giggling. It was humorous to both Judy and Hopper. Mostly to Hopper because he'd never seen it before. Sara was too young to have gone to a school dance and Judy was never into that kind of stuff.
As much as he loved to see his youngest daughter so happy about going to a dance for the first time, he relished in seeing Judy being so happy for El. He watched as the two worked together on El's makeup and hair, laughing like best friends. He got to see Judy leading as a sister and having a good time doing so. Just seeing her happy after such a long time brought tears to Hopper's eyes. He looked through the window as Judy stood in front of the gymnasium doors with El, waiting for her to walk inside.
"You ready?" Judy asked, fluffing up the sleeves on Els' dress as she spoke.
"Yes," El answered, smiling. "I am nervous."
"Because of Mike?" Judy watched the smile on Els' face falter the slightest bit, she looked at the doors between her and Mike, and then looked down at her feet.
