Judy woke up the next morning just the same as many mornings before. Getting ready as normal, just with her extra swim bag. Everything was routine and normal, except for the couch, which was empty.
Hopper wasn't anywhere around the house, and neither was his truck. Judy could see the stress on his face through the dim light the TV reflected off his face. Generally his stress would come from the incompetence of the Hawkins community to handle their own. If the day was anything eventful, Hopper would spend most of his day answering calls about one farmer being mad at another farmer, or a party that got too loud for a quiet neighborhood. Hopper was bored, and it made him stressed.
But this stress - Judy could tell it was different. Something serious and it was about Will. The sweet kid with a quiet brother and a helicopter mom. His dad certainly wasn't someone Will would run off to so it left the lingering question on Judy's mind as she made her way to school.
Where was Will?
Judy's train of thought was soon redirected as she got closer to school. Walking in she went over to Nancy's locker, where she was already standing.
"So, about last night..." Judy said, earning a sudden shocked expression followed by a sympathetic one from the girl in front of her.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to just leave you behind," Nancy apologized, looking down.
"It's okay, I went home right away anyways," Judy said, leaning against a few lockers, watching passing students.
"I saw Steve last night." Judy heard Nancy, to her left. She immediately whipped her back in Nancy's direction, leaning in close.
"What? You snuck out?" Judy yelled-whispered.
"No. He came through my window."
"Nancy Wheeler! You dirty dog!" Judy couldn't help but smile at how Nancy was blushing so hard. She was a lovesick puppy, acting reckless. It was refreshing given that Nancy was normally so uptight about everything.
"We didn't do anything. He helped me study." Nancy countered, pulling last night's flashcards out of her bag. Judy was astounded.
"Steve Harrington? Study? I don't believe it."
"It's true," she said with Barb coming up behind her.
"What's true?" Barb asked, looking between the two girls with a small smile. Judy looked at Nancy with her eyebrows raised, asking 'do you wanna tell her?'. She could tell by the look on Nancy's face, her answer was 'no'.
"Nothing. Just that I might fail Chem," Nancy quickly said, shutting her locker and starting to walk between Judy and Barb down the hall.
"There's no way. You guys are the smartest in our grade. If anyone is going to fail, it's me," Barb said. She was sweet, but she didn't have a backbone and always looked past Nancy's beating around the bush.
