"Do you think we'll be out of here soon?" Nancy asked, looking at Flo, the receptionist, concerned. The two of them were standing at the coffee bar in the police station. Flo was getting ice for Jonathan's bruised cheek.
"You, yes. Him and Judy? No," Flo replied, looking at Jonathan who was handcuffed and sitting at one of the officers desks and then at Judy who was spinning around aimlessly in another officers chair. Something she often did if Hopper had to stop by the station before dropping her off at school on rainy days. No one really said anything about it when she did it. "He assaulted a police officer and her dad is a police officer. She'll probably be here longer than he will knowing Hopper."
Nancy was more concerned for Jonathan than Judy, "Well, how long are you gonna keep him?"
"You and your boyfriend have big plans, do you?" Flo popped her hand on her hip, handing Judy the rag filled with ice.
Nancy chuckled and shook her head, "He's not my boyfriend."
"I think you better tell him that."
"What?"
"Only love makes you that crazy, sweetheart. And that damn stupid." Flo walked away before the girl could respond, patting Judy on the shoulder as she walked back to her desk in the front. Judy could only shove her head in her hands. Nothing could have prepared her for the last three days of her life. And how could she explain it to her father who barely even entertained the idea that there were other galaxies in the universe. She'd be grounded for life. She was sure of it.
"Jonathan? Jesus, what... what happened?" Joyce Byers suddenly busted through the doors, hastily making her way over to her son.
"I'm fine," he said, pushing away the ice that Nancy held to his cheek.
"Why is he wearing handcuffs?" Joyce said frantically.
"Well, your boy assaulted a police officer. That's why," Callahan said, standing up behind Jonathan.
"Take them off!"
"I am afraid I cannot do that," said Callahan, looking at Joyce like she was stupid.
"You heard her. Take 'em off," Hopper said, coming through the doors himself and standing behind Joyce. Judy sank lower in the chair she was in, hoping he wouldn't notice her behind him.
"Chief, I get everyone's emotional here, but there's something you need to see," Powell said, putting in his own two cents. He signaled for Callahan to follow behind him as he walked to the entrance. Hopper followed behind, looking at Judy as he walked back out, making it clear that he knew she was there the entire time. Shit, she whispered under her breath, standing up to stretch and groan and prepare for the brutal restriction she was about to be placed under.
The beating in her chest only increased upon seeing Hopper walking back in the brown box of weapons that had only been acquired an hour ago. Slamming it down in front of Nancy and Jonathan, they both looked as shocked as Judy, but not as shocked as Joyce.
