Indeed, Lucifer could be sure that he had screwed up very deeply.
And what had happened after exposing himself like that? Well, basically Alastor had asked him what the sudden desire to be close was all about and that he had better tell the truth because he knew that Charlie herself had not been pressing him again on the subject of working together bonding and trusting. To which he, who had panicked, only replied the first thing that crossed his brain.
"Clauneck doesn't have a father... well, he does but we don't know who it is.... I'm not pressuring you to say it! It's just that... I think he could use another figure and that... maybe, just maybe... I could be an excellent candidate for a father! I really think so! What do you think?"
Of course, Alastor's reaction had been a poem. Not only the change of his pupils to radio dials and the persistent sound of static were present, also a slight tremor in his hands that longed to shape claws and his antlers that wanted to lengthen at all costs were points to take into consideration to define the emotion that flooded his body after hearing those words.
At least the reaction hadn't lasted long, but the look of narrowed eyes and strained smile hadn't been a better picture for him when he saw him storming out of the kitchen.
The problem was that he still didn't quite understand what all the anger on his part was about. He hadn't said anything that bad, had he? Well, maybe He had. He practically told him that he could recognize Clauneck as his, giving him another father figure that he clearly didn't need considering that everyone at the hotel was taking care of him. Although, in his defense, he could say that he loved the baby more and would do anything for its welfare!
Now what he thought. Those last words could have been a nice addition to his hurried argument, but obviously his nerves wouldn't allow it and when he least expected it, Alastor was already retreating in anger. And since then, he hadn't spoken to him again, not even for the sake of appearances, and everyone had noticed.
Shit, he'd fucked up.
Even his own daughter affirmed to him that he had done so when he ventured to tell her what happened and the things he said without thinking too much about the independent mindedness and big ego of the demon. The only thing that consoled him was that after that, Charlie had given him a big hug and a piece of advice that anything that has been said without thinking can be fixed, he just had to look for the exact moment to establish the subject again and ask for his due apology.
The problem now was to find that moment.
And they were already in their second week without finding that moment.
"Tell me, do you think your mom will want to talk to me if I bring it up when he get back?"
Clauneck, who was leaning back in his portable baby chair, watched Lucifer who had been sitting on the floor for a few minutes while he showed him his new rubber duck creations. At first it had all been fun but as the minutes passed the blond's energy gradually died down until he adopted a pensive and almost melancholy posture.
Even Husk had felt like answering him when he saw him in that state, but Angel gestured to him from a distance in denial. Whatever had happened, they were not to interfere.
The baby let out a babble. Lucifer grimaced, nodding in resignation meanwhile Husk and Angel raised an eyebrow at that.
"You're right, I'll only get him to hate me more. But what else can I do? It's not like I can order him to talk to me!...or can I?" he looked carefully at Clauneck who just cocked his head slightly "No, I can't do that. That would be stooping too low and I've already got my self-esteem in that state."
