Vox has a secret. Alastor comes to him during his heats but won't see him any other time. He also can't tell anyone because Alastor's hung up on keeping his sex life insanely private.
So Vox ends up looking absolutely crazy while Alastor gets exactly what he wants.
So why is Alastor the one getting upset?
Alastor called him this afternoon. Vox was expecting it. He has a few days pencilled with only light appointments every four months for exactly this. Alastor's heats. It's been a regular occurrence for years. Apart from when Alastor fell off the face of this hellscape for seven years. Vox still hasn't gotten a real explanation for that.
Vox made sure the maid came through and made sure to eat a real dinner for once. He'll need his energy.
But there's something off with Alastor this time. Alastor has been sulking since he got here. Usually he spends an hour or two insulting Vox and, in the process, inadvertently admitting that he's been keeping track of what Vox has been up to. Today, he's barely talking.
"Do you not want to be here?" Vox asks finally.
"I never want to be here!" Alastor's often aggravated but usually a little less upset at Vox in particular.
"Okay. Well, leave then?"
"As if that's an option." Alastor looks pissed.
"What do you want me to do?"
"What you always do," he says snippily.
"Do you want me to find you... someone else?" It's killing Vox to say it out loud, but something is wrong.
"Oh so more people can know my secret?!"
"I don't—I haven't told anyone?"
"I know. It's why you're still alive. And thus, I keep coming back." He says it resentfully like he has to.
"You don't have to?"
"I'm sure you'd love to share your stories with the Vees, so I'd rather keep you on my side. I hold up my end of the bargain. You hold up yours."
There's something off about the way Alastor says it. It picks at Vox's brain. It's as if Alastor is looking down on him. Which, okay Vox is familiar with that feeling in general, but this is pointed. Like he thinks he can only ask for help by paying.
But Vox's side in the bargain is the same thing Alastor gets. He's not leveraging being quiet. It's just part of what makes Alastor comfortable with the whole affair.
"I don't get it. What are you upset about?"
"You know something I would prefer not to be known."
"You know I keep my word. Fuck, even if I look nuts sometimes trying to explain why I don't just forget about you."
"Precisely."
"You keep talking as if I'm one misstep away from spilling all your secrets.
"As if I'm foolish enough to think your loyalty extends beyond your benefits."
"Alastor, I'm helping you willingly."
"Yes, as long as you get what you want."
"What do you—Do you think you have to keep coming back or I'll tell people? I'm not—fuck, Alastor. I'm not going to—I'm not going to do that. You can just stop if you want. Whatever. I won't tell anyone." Where the fuck did Alastor get that idea? Vox has never even brought it up since Alastor first mentioned it, let alone threatened him with it.
