CHAPTER XXXIX

July 31st, 2022 - Seoul - Asian Medical Center

It was dark.

Everything around him was surrounded in eerie darkness as Jeongguk turned around to make out some sense of where he was... A forest maybe? He couldn't be sure.

The dried leaves, grit and pebbles poked and pricked his feet and he wiggled his toes to realize that he wasn't wearing any shoes. In fact, he was not even in his clothes. Just a long dress like fabric cloaked his body... it was soft but Jeongguk felt unnaturally bare in it even though he was well covered.

Walking with trepidation, he tried to take careful steps since his vision was still compromised due to the pitch blackness around him.

He couldn't hear anything at all... Isn't that weird? It feels like he's in a forest but why is it so silent? No chirping birds, no hooting owls.. No innocent prowling of the habitants of this place.

Maybe it's not a forest at all then... Where the hell am I?

He took a few more steps ahead, only the crunching of leaves under his feet to keep him company.. He walked and walked for, what felt like hours, going straight ahead. He met no obstacles in his path as if he was walking on a straight road.

Feet tired, body aching... he continued walking, somewhere he was supposed to go... He couldn't tell you where...All he knew was that he must keep walking.

Must keep moving ahead...

Just as he thought he would pass out from the exhaustion, he heard a voice. A voice so familiar, so close to his heart... he felt a stab of pain pass through his chest at the sound.

A deep baritone capable of bringing him to his knees in a second.

A voice he would give anything to hear again.

A voice that he needed to desperately hold on to.

His angel... his baby was here! But where?

Straining his eyes to catch a glimpse or some movement to find his love, Jeongguk turned around in circles.

"TAE?"

His own voice echoed horribly in the silent place, hurting his ears in the process. He covered them on instinct.

Not hearing any response he tried again.

"TAEHYUNG? Where are you?"

And then he heard it, loud and clear as if the said man was standing right next to him. He swears he could feel his warm breath on the back of his neck.

"Gukkie...."

Turning around quickly, he extended his hands since he still couldn't see, he waved them in the air as if to catch a hold of his baby... but there was nothing.

What? He was right here.

Jeongguk started walking again, this time picking up speed. Taehyung was here and he needed to find him so they both could get out of whatever place this was!

"GUKKIE....."

This time the voice was loud and panicked... as if scared of something.

Fearing whatever was making Taehyung panic like that, Jeongguk began to run in the direction of the voice. He could feel all the blood rush into his brain making it hurt. He felt so much pressure on his skull, he thought it would split open. Ignoring it, he kept running... He had to reach his baby.
