Who I Used to Be

Emily POV:

It's senior year and all I want is to graduate and be done with high school. I want to graduate and get as far away from here as possible.

They say that high school is supposed to be the best years of your life. Maybe if you had told me that during my Freshman or Sophomore years then maybe I would've believed you.

But not anymore.

I'm not who I used to be. I'm not the same person that I was back then.

Why you may ask? I'll tell you.

It may seem kind of sad to say but I peaked back then. In academics, popularity, in everything. In those first two years of high school, I was one of the best lacrosse players in the nation. I had already surpassed 100 career points by the halfway point of my sophomore season and I had dozens of colleges just waiting until I could accept an offer to play for them.

But that never happened.

Sophomore year was the last time that I ever touched a lacrosse stick. But that's not the only reason why my life has gone downhill ever since. During my second year of high school, I was dating the girl of my dreams. The love of my life.

Tatum Reese.

She's a year younger than me and ever since I quit lacrosse, she's become the center of attention at our school. It's kind of crazy because she didn't play much freshman year. She must have put a lot of work in to become the player that she is now. I admire her hard work but I'll never be able to tell her that.

Because two things happened after my sophomore season ended. The first was that I would never play lacrosse again. And the second? The second was that Tatum broke up with me. She ended things with me right before I started my junior year.

She never told me why. She didn't even tell me in person that she was breaking up with me. All I got was a text message that said, "I can't be with you anymore". No reasoning or explanation. At first, I tried talking to her about it but she always just brushed me off and avoided me.

I never got closure after that breakup. Maybe that's why I haven't dated anyone else since. Because no matter how much I try to convince myself otherwise, I am still hopelessly in love with Tatum Reese.

Tatum POV:

Freshman year of high school is where it all started. I walked into lacrosse tryouts that year as one of seven freshman trying out for the team. Everyone else seemed so much bigger and better than me. So much older and more experienced than me.

But it didn't matter whether you were a junior or a senior. There was one girl that everyone looked up to and followed.

And that girl was sophomore Emily Holloway. One of the best lacrosse players that I have ever seen.

She was only in her second year in high school and she was already coming up on the 100 career point mark. She also had more D1 offers than any of these juniors or seniors could even dream of. She also made the state's first team as a freshman.

She was everything I ever dreamed of being.

That first year at tryouts, she took me under her wing. She helped me come out of my shell and she helped me become a better lacrosse player.

She also taught me how to love.

I fell so hopelessly in love with Emily Holloway and the last thing that I would ever even think about happening is that she would fall as equally in love with me.

We dated from that lacrosse season all the way to the end of the summer. We broke up just before school started before my sophomore year.

I was the one to end things, but it wasn't because I didn't love her. I still love her.

I just can't ever tell her that.
