Emily POV:
I slammed my locker shut, tucking my books under my arm and then walking off towards my last period class. Today is the first day of spring sports season. That means that all the various teams will start holding tryouts today.
Not us though.
Ever since I quit lacrosse, I've been on the track team. I don't really care for the sport itself. I just do it because I have a couple friends on the team and it's a good way to stay in shape.
I typically run the 100 and the 4 by 1 relay. If you looked at me, you wouldn't guess that I would be a sprinter. Not because I'm fat or anything like that. I just have very good upper body strength so you would assume that I would be a thrower.
But I can't do that.
So I stick to sprinting.
As I was walking to class, I could hear frantic footsteps approaching from behind me. I laughed and rolled my eyes to see my friend Evan running up. He stopped next to me with a huge smile on his face.
"Are you ready for track today?" He asked excitedly.
"Oh yes. So ready." I said sarcastically. He laughed at my response.
"I've always told you that running just to run isn't fun." He said with a laugh. Evan is on the boys lacrosse team. That's how we met. I bumped into him during youth lacrosse tryouts one year. He's been my best friend since we were like six.
People always tell us that we should date but that's never going to happen. Evan is like my brother and he feels the same way about me.
"Yeah I know. But I gotta do something. I can't just not play a sport. What else am I supposed to do with my life?" I said with a laugh. Evan just shook his head.
"You could always come back to lacrosse?" He asked hopefully. I smiled sadly at him and shook my head.
"I wish. You know that if I could, I would." I replied.
"I know." He said with a sigh.
There's a reason that I quit lacrosse. Actually, quitting wasn't really my choice. I used to be very good at lacrosse and that sport was one of the things that I loved the most. It pains me that I physically can't play anymore.
"Hey I'll still come to all of your games though." I said as I nudged him on the side in an attempt to change the subject. Reliving what happened at the end of my sophomore season isn't really something I want to relive right now.
"Oh you better. My face off percentage is now up to 76%." He said excitedly. Evan is what they call a FOGO in boys lacrosse. That basically just means that he is the face off guy. He takes every single one because he has the highest chance of winning. The fact that he's won 76% of his face offs in his high school career is extremely impressive.
"Wow that's amazing Evan!" I replied. I was genuinely happy for him.
"Thanks Em. Hey I got to go. Can't be late." He said.
"Late for what? You're skipping Spanish again?" I asked. He just shrugged his shoulders as he started walking backwards away from me.
"Who needs Spanish?" He said with a smirk.
"Considering it's the second most spoken language in our country, a lot of people." I said. He just brushed it off and rolled his eyes.
"Oh well. My boba date is more important." He said with a smile. He then turned and walked away.
Evan is dating one of the girls on the lacrosse team. They've made it a habit lately to skip last period on Mondays and go out to get boba teas. I honestly don't know how either of them plans to keep doing this with lacrosse season in full swing.
