BACK AT THE CAVE
“So, did your guy's shelter get attacked?” Lukas asked, trying to start the conversation.“Yeah, but me and Petra stayed. So did others... but it kept getting attacked. Petra kept getting more pissed and violent. She didn’t seem like herself. She kept forgetting everything. I would get it if she was forgetful... but she wasn’t. She kept getting more hostile and nearly started fights. And one day after fighting with me... she just stormed off.”
“How long ago was that?” Lukas asked. “Probably like near a week or two ago.” Jesse answered honestly. “Well, I just hope she’s ok... plus, the mobs have gotten WAY more aggressive. I know she could handle herself... but still... but the mobs are even MORE hostile.” Lukas replied.
“She’d probably put it in a headlock by now.” Aiden budged in, chuckling. “Well, that’s one thing we all could probably agree on.” Lukas added. “By the way, what happened to Gill and Maya?” Jesse questioned. Lukas and Aiden got quiet. “Well, it’s quite a long story…” Lukas chuckled a bit, trying to cheer himself up. “I don’t mind.” Jesse replied. “Alright.” Lukas started.
“We followed the other group. For a while, it was fine... until it got ambushed by a bunch of infected. We ran to a nearby cave. I heard Gill’s scream. I rushed back to check on him... he was scratched... I watched him die in front of me... to put it vaguely. Shortly after, Maya was getting weaker. She was beginning to look like an infected... she insisted we had to kill her... neither of us wanted to. But she demanded it... we... had to... she wanted it.” Lukas stopped abruptly, tears forming.
“I-I…” He started, then just started to break down crying. Jesse came closer, hugging him. “I didn’t want to…” Lukas muttered. Aiden came closer, patting Lukas’s back. It seemed to be Lukas, who had to kill her. He just started bawling his eyes out. “It wasn’t your fault.” Aiden silently spoke. It was shocking for Jesse to see another side of Aiden. Aiden never acted like this. Not even once.
“May I ask another question? Jesse replied, looking at Aiden. “My arm?” Aiden guessed. Aiden’s arm was amputated. It has been since Jesse first saw them in the forest. Jesse slowly nodded. “Apparently I came in contact with an infected person. Lukas amputated it because I didn’t know how to. I assumed Lukas could of helped me so I didn’t fuck up.” He answered blankly. “You can stop the infection?” Jesse replied, shocked. Aiden nodded.
“It was too late for Maya.” He answered vaguely. Jesse nodded, then his attention turned back to Lukas, still bawling his eyes out into Jesse’s shoulder. This all clearly happened recently, especially because of how sensitive Lukas was to this topic. Jesse just let him cry, not even stopping him. He could tell Lukas was trying to hold it in. He knew how he felt. A little bit too much.
