“Ivy, may I ask you something?” Axel requested. “Yes.” Ivy nodded, being the only one out in the hallways of the resting quarter’s hallways other than Axel. “Are the infected con-” “You're asking to see if your friend is really being tortured, aren’t you?” Ivy guessed. “Yes.” Axel admitted.
“I just want to tell you first that I was cured from it, so it makes me immune. So I can help in more ways than one.” Ivy pointed out. “But back to your question, they are very much conscious, but they can’t control their body. It doesn’t run their mind. It just runs their body.” Ivy answered. “But what if the person dies before becoming infected?” Axel questioned.
“Then they come back alive. The sickness makes them. And before you ask, they can feel everything. Every inch of pain inflicted.” Ivy answered. “So Jesse’s alive?” Axel continued. “Yes, and every single thing hurting him, he can feel.” Ivy added. “So Olivia’s basically torturing him.” Axel replied. Ivy nodded.
“She thinks the infected are non-brained zombies, that the person is dead. It can look like it, but it’s because of the sickness slowly eating at the victim’s body.” Ivy sighed. “She thinks of them as monsters. Not as humans. Hell, even after I was cured, she treated me like shit.” Ivy added. “Wait, so is there a way to save Jesse AND keep him alive?” Axel questioned.
“I’d tell you, but one of your friends already knows the possibilities of that.” Ivy answered. “And how were you cured?” Axel asked. “I don’t know the exact details, but I did remember Glistering Melon being one of them.” Ivy replied. “Hm.” Axel added. “I’ve tried to tell Olivia, but she doesn’t ‘TRUST’ me.” Ivy muttered.
“We can sneak it in the cure. How much was there?” Axel asked. “It won’t work. Olivia’s like a gargoyle. She’s always watching.” Ivy advised. “It doesn’t hurt to try.” Axel added. “Fine, it was one slice. But you’ll have to find watermelon, which isn’t easy around here, then gold to make gold nuggets, which is hard to find. Luckily, I have one.” Ivy said, handing it to Axel. “Thanks.” Axel replied.
“No problem. I’ll find some watermelon on my next trip. If you go, she’ll know something is up.” Ivy said. Axel nodded. “Alright, we’ll meet back here tomorrow.” Axel added, offering a handshake. “I rather not shake hands.” Ivy requested. “Alright.” Axel shrugged, putting his hand into his pocket.
