Chapter 63: Can't sleep

Jesse kept staring at the ceiling. Jesse sighed, rolling over, trying desperately to go to sleep. “God dammit.” Jesse muttered, standing up and putting on the cloak Ivy let him lend, going out on the mini area outside the other door surrounded by fences. Jesse looked at the night sky, seeing the stars gleaming brightly.

He couldn’t sleep after the incident in BoomTown. Their screams bled past his ears into his brain, echoing over and over. Jesse kept hitting himself in the head, trying to get those thoughts out of his head. “Jesse?” A voice asked from behind him. He turned around, seeing Axel.

“What are you doing out here? I thought you were asleep?” Jesse questioned. “Was. I heard the door opening, so I decided to check on you. Doing good?” Axel replied, walking over next to him.

“Honestly, I don’t know. Just everything that happened. Olivia is going insane, Lukas’s condition, Jessica’s insane amount of injuries, and back at BoomTown... I just don’t know how to make sense of it.” Jesse answered truthfully.

Axel looked at him with empathy, understanding how confused he was. “I get that feeling. We’re all feeling that.” Axel added. “I just... feel bad for being so damn careless.” Jesse muttered, his fingers going through his hair in a stressed manner.

“What? You didn’t do anything wrong. You were backed into a corner! Not to mention, I started this whole mess with stealing the fucking potion.” Axel insisted.

“If I wasn’t so careless and had a plan on how to deal with Ivor, I wouldn’t be ‘infected’ and have to wear this cloak, Olivia wouldn’t of gone insane, Jessica wouldn’t have gotten hurt as badly, Lukas wouldn’t be extremely sick, and I wouldn’t of had you feel guilty for something that was my own fucking fault.” Jesse ranted, tears streaming down.

Axel stayed silent, unsure how to answer. “None of this is your fault. The reason Lukas is extremely sick isn’t because of you.” Axel replied. “At least, I think.” He added. “What do you mean?” Jesse sniffled, wiping tears away from his eyes. Axel sighed. “You know when Ivor said Lukas might be immune?” Axel asked. Jesse nodded.

“Well, he was right. He kept it to himself because he didn’t want to be a target for anything. The only reason why I know is because Jessica told me she overheard it. Not to mention he was nearly going to sacrifice himself to save Maya. By the looks of it, he couldn’t. I feel like he realized after the lab.” Axel answered.

Jesse’s eyes widened. He stayed silent while Axel continued. “I feel like it still makes him sick or what not, just not infecting him.” Axel considered. “Maybe.” Jesse added quietly under his breath. The two stayed silent for a long while. “Well, wanna get some sleep?” Axel asked, breaking the awkward silence. “I’ll try.” Jesse replied.
