Author's POV
Adhrit woke up early in the morning, finished all his morning business, and was now sitting nervously on the edge of the bed. Today was his engagement, and he hadn’t been able to sleep a wink the night before.
Yesterday, he had gone shopping with his mother, and bought a royal blue sherwani for his engagement, along with some other necessary items.
Obviously, it was all unwillingly — after all, who could be excited to get married right after going through a heartbreak, and betrayal?
Still, he was determined not to let this whole mess affect his wedding life. Bani would definitely get, what she deserved in her life.
He wanted to talk to Bani once before everything, to know, if she really wanted to marry him. He wanted to tell her about all the mess, he had been through, about Anaisha, and to know her genuine reaction regarding all this.
He wanted to meet her, and clear everything at the very beginning itself, in order to avoid any misunderstanding in the future.
But alas! His Papa and Bhaskar Uncle had decided everything in such a hurry that here he was — today was his engagement, and the couple to be hadn’t even met once.
Yes, it was true that, Adhrit and Bani were childhood friends, but it had been a long time, since they last met. They were around 15 or 16, when Bhaskar shifted to Canada, along with Bani, because he got a job in a law firm there.
He thought about the day he went to see her off at the airport. He had cried while hugging her — his only closest female friend, with whom, he had always felt comfortable.
"I still remember that day, I literally cried like a crybaby. And just the thought of meeting her after this much years is exciting me so much. I really am very happy, to be honest.", he said to himself, giggling while remembering the old times.
But his expression turned gloomy the very next second, as he remembered the real reason behind their meeting today.
He knew very well that, he was agreeing to this proposal, only to make his family happy, but he definitely didn’t want Bani to be a scapegoat for the situation.
He knew that, the foundation of this relationship wasn’t love, but he was dedicated to making it work, by submitting himself to it in every manner possible.
Adhrit sighed heavily, shrugging away all the thoughts. Trying to stay sane, he composed himself, and descended the stairs — only to witness the preparations for the engagement. Watching his parents happy, a small, yet pretty smile made its way to his face.
Where, at Adhrit’s home, the environment was happy and festive, at the same time, there was an atmosphere of concern in Mehrotra Mansion due to Anaisha’s condition.
Jeet was sitting in the hall, holding his phone in his hand. He called the in-charge of Adhrit’s department, to know about his whereabouts.
The call got picked, and a voice came from the other side, "Good morning, Sir."
Jeet, without even responding to the greeting, asked coldly, "Where is Adhrit? Did he reach the office?"
The person on the other side got scared by the intensity of his voice, but composing himself, he answered in a polite tone, "Sir, Adhrit didn’t come. He took a day off."
Hearing the reply, Jeet frustratingly asked, "A day off, once again?? Reason?"
The man on the other end replied, "Sir, he said that, some personal work came up, and that, he would take a day off today as well."
Humming at his response, Jeet cut the call and looked at his sister, who was looking very gloomy. Her lashes were down, so Jeet couldn't see the madness lingering in her eyes.
