Author's POV
When Kriya heard Preeti say that, she wanted to talk to her about Jeet, her eyes widened in sheer shock.
Her gaze, filled with disbelief, remained locked on Preeti, who sat with a faint, composed smile on her face.
The calmness of that smile only intensified Kriya's confusion and unease.
"What happened? Did I say something wrong, which made you this shocked?" Preeti asked, her voice steady and serene, radiating a composure, that Kriya struggled to match.
Kriya blinked, forcing herself to regain composure. She drew a shaky breath, and let a small smile appear on her lips, as she attempted to sound collected. "It's nothing like that… I was just a little surprised, thinking about what you would want to talk to me regarding your husband."
Preeti's smile widened gently, an air of quiet certainty surrounding her. "It's something important, and I can only talk to you about this."
Kriya nodded slowly, though her mind swirled with confusion. "Come… please have a seat."
Preeti inclined her head gracefully and took her seat, while Kriya settled into her chair, her heart still racing. The room was filled with a tense silence, broken only by the faint rustle of clothing, as the two women adjusted themselves.
Preeti's gaze lingered on Kriya's confused face, almost studying her, as if weighing the right moment to speak. After a few seconds, she finally broke the silence. "What do you think about Jeet?"
The question landed like a thunderbolt. Kriya froze, unable to form a coherent thought. She stared at Preeti, completely stunned, unable to process what she was being asked.
"What are you trying to ask? I… I am unable to understand." she stammered, her voice hesitant and trembling under the weight of confusion.
Preeti's soft smile remained. "I just asked a simple question. No need to be hesitant. Consider me your elder sister, and speak freely. Just tell me… how do you think Jeet is as a person?"
Kriya hesitated, her mind racing. She wanted to choose her words carefully, yet she felt compelled to be honest. After a moment of internal struggle, she finally spoke.
"He is a nice person, who knows how to respect a woman. He might show himself as cold and rude to everyone, but inside… he is very soft and kind-hearted. I never thought, I would say something like this, because at first, I didn't like him at all. But now… it's completely different. It's like… ‘never judge a book by its cover’ with him. I must say, you are very lucky to be his wife."
Her voice softened at the end, her eyes reflecting genuine admiration, as if every word came straight from her heart.
Preeti laughed softly, a musical, light sound that seemed to calm the room. "Indeed. I am very lucky to be his wife. But guess what? Perhaps, this was the extent of my destiny… my companionship. And now, I want to hand over my destiny to you."
Kriya's eyes widened, dumbfounded, unable to comprehend, what Preeti meant. "What are you trying to say? I… I don't understand anything."
Preeti exhaled slowly, letting a faint sigh escape her lips, and finally spoke the question she had come to ask. "Do you like Jeet?"
The words struck Kriya like lightning. Her eyes widened further, her heartbeat surged, yet she masked her emotions with a stern, composed expression. "No. What kind of a question is this? How can you even ask me something like that?"
Preeti, anticipating this reaction, remained calm, her tone steady. "I know this might sound wrong, but my intentions are pure. I know, deep in your heart, you do like Jeet. I saw the same feelings in your eyes, that I have seen in his. I just wanted to hear it from you, so I could tell you something important."
