Author's POV
Preeti did not even have the courage to raise her eyes, and look at Jeet. She knew, how intensely angry Jeet was at her, and she also knew that, his anger was completely justified.
Jeet walked towards Preeti with angry steps, grabbed her shoulders, and shook her slightly. "I asked you something! Give me a proper explanation of what was written in that file!"
Preeti's eyes were fixed on the floor, as she stuttered, "I-I w-was go-going to t-tell you...."
Jeet's grip on her shoulders tightened, as he spoke through gritted teeth, "You were going to tell me... Really? When?"
With that, he let go of Preeti with a sharp jerk, causing her to stumble a little.
He ran a hand through his hair, his face etched with frustration. "Four months... Four and a half months, and you didn't say a word to me, Preeti? You are pregnant, and you didn't even think once about telling me?"
"I was scared, Jeet... I didn't want you to take any step, that would hurt you later!" Preeti's voice came out weak and low.
Jeet looked at her, his expression quickly changing from anger to deep worry and pain.
He said, his voice hurting, "I would have definitely done whatever it took, without regrets, but now... now it's too late, Preeti. Even abortion isn't an option now. Do you know, what this report says? Life-threatening complications... you can even die! There are only small chances for you to survive because of this pregnancy!"
Preeti sighed, and placing her hands on his cheeks, she calmly stated her viewpoint. "It's not like, I was going to live long anyway. You know, I have a brain tumor, and I won't be able to survive for much longer. But before going away forever, I want to give you your baby, to remind you of me, to fulfill your wish of becoming a father. I have to die anyways — some months earlier, or some months later — it doesn't matter."
Jeet was about to interrupt, but Preeti stopped him and continued, "I know, for you, this marriage was always just a responsibility, because you never loved me. But today, I want to tell you that, you've fulfilled the responsibility of a husband very well. You provided me with a life, I couldn’t even imagine. Thank you for everything. But now, please, let's not argue over this. Let's just enjoy the last few months together. Please..."
She almost pleaded with him, and Jeet couldn’t say anything to deny her. Nodding his head slowly, he wrapped her in a warm, protective embrace.
It was true that, Jeet didn't love Preeti romantically, but they were very good friends, and the reality that she wasn’t going to survive for long always hurt him deeply.
It was almost eight months ago, when they both learned about Preeti's aggressive brain tumor, and that treatment was no longer possible. Jeet had tried many doctors, but the final response was the same: she wouldn’t be able to survive for long, which was heartbreaking.
Preeti had asked Jeet not to tell anyone else, because she wanted to live a normal life until her last breath. Jeet respected her wish, but never stopped her treatment, hoping that something might work, but unfortunately, it never did.
Jeet hardened his heart and decided that, for the last few months Preeti had left, he would cherish them, making sure she never felt, she was going to die soon.
He broke the hug, looked at her, and asked, "Would you like to go out with me?"
Preeti asked with surprised excitement, "Where?"
Jeet smiled and replied, "Our old friendship spot from college."
Preeti smiled brightly and nodded, so they both left the room to spend the day together.
