Hair.

Hair was an important part of shared Keeper way of life. 

It was and technically is a way to gain magic/energy which is why even in the 1900s many male keepers also kept their hair long. They would/can do this by lying on the ground with their hair either fanned out or have their head over a hole with their hair inside the hole. This allowed them to absorb magic/energy from the surrounding areas. The amount of magic/energy they can store are based on certain factors.

Nowadays since magic isn't something that is used regularly many Keepers have decided to have liberty with their hair. Back then, for Keepers who were colonies their hair was forcefully cut off especially for those under the British empire.

Hair is also unique in the sense that it stays the same constantly no matter what form the Keeper is in. Even if they are in their "flag form" their hair will still remain like it is in their "human form".
