"I want to know how she's listening in on private conversations when she's supposed to be banned from the grounds!" Hermione's voice echoed sharply through the empty hallway, her steps stomping with each word. Now that Harry and Jupiter were back to normal—aside from Harry's new collection of bruises and cuts—Hermione was back in action, eyes gleaming with the determination to track down Rita Skeeter.
"Maybe she bugged you," Harry said with a nonchalant shrug, his fingers tightly woven with Jupiter's as the four of them made their way down the corridor. He seemed almost cheerful, content to be carrying Jupiter's bag over his shoulder. It was the little things she'd missed—the warmth of his hand, his easy smile, the way he was always there to help without her asking.
"Bugged?" Ron repeated, his brow furrowing in confusion. "What, like she put fleas on you?"
"No, I think he's saying that she is a bug," Jupiter said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. Harry rolled his eyes at both of them.
"It's a Muggle thing," Harry explained, his tone slightly impatient. "They use little microphones—tiny devices that make your voice louder—and they hide them on you to listen in—" He launched into a rambling explanation of Muggle surveillance technology, but Jupiter's attention drifted. Her gaze flickered to Hermione, who looked equally disinterested, her fingers tapping restlessly against her wand.
"Wait..." Jupiter's voice cut through Harry's lecture. She turned to Hermione, a spark of realization lighting up her eyes. "Maybe she is a bug."
"What?" Harry and Ron chorused, their voices a confused jumble, while Hermione's mouth fell open in sudden understanding.
"You're saying she's an ani—"
"That's exactly what I'm saying!" Jupiter's face lit up, and she nearly bounced on her toes. "Snuffles managed to get into the castle unnoticed, but he was too big to actually eavesdrop. She's small enough to go anywhere!"
"That's brilliant!" Hermione gasped, and her earlier frustration melted into pure excitement. "Why didn't I think of that before?"
A memory hit Jupiter like a lightning bolt. "Oh my God!" she blurted, her voice high with realization. "There was a beetle on the table!"
"What table?" Harry's eyebrows knitted together, his confusion growing.
"The table I was sitting at with Noland and Christina!" Jupiter's words tumbled out as she grinned, excitement making her voice quick. She conveniently ignored Harry's sour look at the mention of Will. "That's how she knew we were on the edge of breaking up!"
