Jupiter and Will both jumped as Christina Farraway slammed her bag down onto the seat across from them at the lunch table. Her face was flushed with frustration, and she looked like she'd stormed across the entire Great Hall just to get there. Normally, she'd have Naomi in tow, but today she was alone, and that was already a sign something was off.
The four of them—Jupiter, Will, Christina, and Naomi—had been eating lunch together for a week now, ever since Jupiter's blow-up with Harry had left things tense between them. It had been a relief to find out that Will and Christina were already good friends. It gave her a break from the constant drama with Harry.
"What happened now, Chris?" Will asked, folding his arms on the table with a bemused smile.
"Naomi's with her stupid boyfriend at his stupid table next to my stupid sister," Christina spat, her glare darting toward the Hufflepuff table.
Jupiter craned her neck to look. Sure enough, Naomi was perched next to Duncan Kelsey, laughing over something while sitting right beside Cora, Christina's sister. Jupiter's eyebrows shot up. "She's still going out with him?"
"Yeah, just to make me angry," Christina muttered. She bit down hard on the inside of her cheek, her eyes narrowed with irritation.
"What did you do to her this time?" Will teased, clearly amused by Christina's fiery mood.
"I—" Christina started, then cut herself off, glancing quickly around the crowded hall before leaning in closer. She lowered her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "I snogged her. And now she's throwing a hissy fit because she liked it."
For a moment, Jupiter and Will just stared at her, stunned. The low chatter and clinking of silverware around them seemed to recede into the background as Christina's words hung in the air.
"You what?" Jupiter blurted, her curiosity blazing to life. "When did that happen?"
"Last night. In the common room," Christina admitted, and for the first time, a flush of pink colored her usually pale cheeks. "It just... happened. I didn't plan it, obviously. And now she's off with Duncan just to spite me, and it's working. It's infuriating."
Jupiter couldn't help it—she burst out laughing. "Honestly, you should have seen that coming, Chris. Naomi's always been dramatic."
"Ugh, I know," Christina said, grudgingly rolling her eyes.
As the conversation shifted back to a lighter, teasing tone, Jupiter felt Will's eyes lingering on her longer than usual. She tried to ignore the warmth in his gaze, chalking it up to his amusement over the whole messy situation. Still, it made her feel slightly uneasy, like there was something just beneath the surface that she wasn't ready to face.
