Chapter 16: The Future Queen

The distant sound of hooves clattering against the cobblestone path reached the ears of those within the palace walls. The princess of the Western Kingdom had finally arrived with her entourage that marked the beginning of a pivotal moment for King Lucian's realm.

The majestic horses which were adorned in rich finery, pulled an ornate carriage towards the grand entrance of the palace. The crest of the Western Kingdom gleamed brightly on the carriage door. Nobles and servants alike gathered in anticipation with their faces evident of both curiosity and reverence.

As the carriage came to a halt, footmen in resplendent livery swiftly moved to open the door. Princess Victoria Westford emerged, her regal bearing immediately commanding attention. She was dressed in a gown of deep emerald silk that accentuated her auburn hair and fair complexion. Every movement she made was a testament to her royal upbringing as King Lucian.

King Lucian on the other hand, flanked by his advisors and guards, approached the princess with a measured stride. His royal attire which was impeccably tailored and adorned with the insignia of Montebello, added to his imposing presence. As he greeted Princess Victoria, his demeanor remained calm and composed, yet his mind was far from settled.

"Welcome to Montebello, Princess Victoria," Lucian said, his voice carrying formality. "It is an honor to have you here."

"Thank you, Your Majesty," Victoria replied, her voice smooth and melodic. "The journey was long, but your kingdom's beauty makes it worthwhile."

As Lucian and Victoria exchanged pleasantries, he couldn't help but notice her eyes. They were a deep, captivating blue—a striking feature that drew immediate attention. Yet, despite their beauty, there was a certain coldness in them that unsettled him. They reminded him of Isabel's eyes, which were also blue but of a lighter, icier shade. Isabel's eyes, however, never felt cold. They were warm, filled with emotion and life, a complete contrast to the princess's gaze.

Lucian found his thoughts drifting to Isabel. Her presence had become a source of comfort and joy in his life which was a respite from the burdens of kingship. Her eyes, though icy blue, always held a warmth that reached deep into his soul.

As the formal introductions continued, the palace bustled with preparations for the grand welcome feast. Lucian remained dutifully by Victoria's side, yet his mind frequently wandered back to Isabel. He knew there was not any importance to this alliance.

Finally, Lucian and Victoria moved inside the dining hall which had a table set for two. Banners and flowers adorned the space, marking the significance of the union that was to come.

King Lucian and Princess Victoria sat facing each other who were the only occupants of the grand dining hall. Lucian had insisted on a private meal, wary of the rumors that could spread and reach Isabel if others were present.

Lucian forced a polite smile as he turned to Princess Victoria. "I trust your accommodations are to your liking, Princess Victoria?"

Victoria nodded gracefully, her deep blue eyes meeting his with a cool intensity. "Yes, Your Majesty. The palace is truly magnificent. Your hospitality is most generous."

Lucian inclined his head, though his thoughts were elsewhere. "We are honored to have you here."

Victoria’s eyes seemed to scrutinize him, and Lucian felt an uncomfortable pushiness in her gaze. "Our alliance will bring much-needed stability and prosperity to both our lands," she said with confident tone.

Lucian nodded absently-mindedly. "Indeed."

Victoria pressed on as she sensed that he was distracted. "Tell me, Your Majesty, what are your interests? What do you enjoy doing in your free time?"

Lucian took a sip of his wine, stalling for time. "I find peace in riding," he said finally. "And you?"

Victoria's lips curved into a smile. "I enjoy riding and falconry. Perhaps we could ride together one day."

Lucian gave a noncommittal nod. "Perhaps."

Victoria's smile faded slightly, but she continued undeterred. "Your court is full of wise and accomplished individuals. I have met several nobles already, and they have all been very welcoming."

"Yes, they are loyal and dedicated," Lucian replied, his tone flat. "We are fortunate to have them."

Victoria leaned in as her voice dropped to a more intimate tone. "Your Majesty, I was a bit apprehensive about this alliance at first, but I believe we can make it work."

Lucian felt a flicker of irritation. She was already speaking as if their engagement was a foregone conclusion. "Change is never easy," he said tersely. "But we must do what is best for our kingdoms."

Victoria's eyes narrowed slightly. "I agree, Your Majesty. And I look forward to working closely with you."

Lucian forced another smile, feeling increasingly cornered. "We shall see," he said, uninterested.

The conversation continued in a strained manner, Victoria pressing for more personal connection while Lucian remained avoidant. He knew he had to maintain a polite facade, but the truth was, he felt trapped by the minister's threat that had brought them to this point. His heart was not in this alliance, and every moment with Victoria only reminded him of what he stood to lose.
