Y/N's POV
"Hey my love, breakfast is ready." Emily calls from the kitchen while I'm still in the bathroom doing my hair.
"I'll be right there," I call back and notice that my stomach is growling.
With a smile on my lips, I pull a few strands out of my braid and look at myself in the mirror for a moment.
I'm proud of myself for being able to lift my arm long enough above my head to braid a french braid.
I nod contentedly at my reflection in the mirror and leave the bathroom.
With the crutch in my hand, I make my way to the kitchen, but the room is empty.
I let my gaze wander through the light-flooded kitchen that has been our home for the past few weeks. The tall windows are open, letting in the sunlight and the smell of the sea.
I'm really going to miss this kitchen.
There's a bowl of fruit on the kitchen counter and our books that we're currently reading are next to it.
On vacation, Emily and I got into the habit of reading together every morning over coffee.
Each of us silently engrossed in a book while enjoying the sun or holding hands.
It was a nice new routine.
I wonder if we'll manage to stick to this routine at home.
My heart jumps at the thought of home.
I never knew what homesickness was before, but now I understand it a little.
"I'm here, sweetheart." I hear from the terrace and the sound of Emily's voice makes my heart beat faster.
I bite my lower lip happily and walk towards the wide-open patio doors.
The sun bathes the ground in front of it in golden light and the coloful curtains blow gently in the warm summer breeze, but obscure the view of the terrace where my girlfriend is waiting.
As I reach the curtain, I take a deep breath and can no longer hold back my loving smile as I step onto the terrace.
At first I am blinded by the bright sun and I hold a hand in front of my face to protect myself until I get used to the brightness.
I let my hand fall and my gaze wanders briefly over the blue, glittering sea that stretches beneath the terrace to the horizon.
Emily is standing there in a dark blue dress that blows playfully around her legs in the wind.
She has laid her gray hair to one side and she smiles at me so lovingly that it almost moves me to tears.
She is so beautiful.
"Good morning, Angel." Emily says and stretches out her hands to me.
I drop my crutch and walk the few steps towards her almost without wobbling before I fall into Emily's embrace.
"Good morning, Darling," I whisper, pressed against her neck and breathing in her scent.
"Happy Birthday to You..." Emily starts to sing quietly and leans back to smile at me.
For a moment I am completely taken aback and confused.
I never celebrated my birthday, ever.
It was never an important day, it was more like one of the worst days and I stopped being sad about it years ago.
That's why I never told Emily about my birthday.
But then I simply give in to this warm feeling and watch Emily, touched, as she sings me a radiant serenade.
"I wish you all the best, my love." With these words she steps aside and reveals the table set behind her.
A beautiful cake, on which various colorful fruits are lined up, decorated with a tall purple candle, forms the center of the table set.
On the lightly flowered tablecloth there are two plates next to the cake, filled with pancakes and scrambled eggs.
Artfully folded napkins mark the two dining places that are opposite each other, and there is also a small crown on one of the plates.
