The natural bliss and beauty of the warming sunshine started to slowly sink; from the high heavens to the low-lying horizons. The sun started to stand down for the night as darkness arose. Watching all life scurry away for the night and prepare for the following day was comforting.
Iskra sat away from the camp, on the edge with a clear view of the vivid and beautiful sunset. Clouds stroke though the pink and orange sky, circling the sun like a ripple.
"Hey," Zuko whispered, sitting down.
She offered him a kind smile, turning back to the disappearing sun. Their feet hung off the edge, backs breaking out into goosebumps.
"You missed dinner," He spoke warmly.
Iskra paused, she hadn't even noticed. Her mind was too occupied on her mother, Zuko, firebending, the war. Everything. She needed a break.
"Sorry, I've just been thinking about my mother," She confessed, sighing softly.
Zuko slowly rested a hand on her shoulder, trying to offer comfort he hasn't received in so long.
"What if she is alive?" Iskra turned to face him with teary eyes. "What if he was telling the truth?"
"Then we'll find her," Zuko held her hand, squeezing gently.
She nodded, sniffling. Her hand left his, wiping a single tear that fell before turning back to the lowering sun.
They sat in each others presence, enjoying the silence. So much to be said, so much wanted to be said. But they stayed silent, watching peacefully.
"Do you remember when we use to climb the mountains and watch the sunset, every night?" Iskra smiled warmly.
"How could I forget," Zuko chuckled.
"What do you mean?" She asked lightly.
"I only liked the fire nation when you were there," He admitted. "When you left all I could think about was you, us."
"But you left straight after me," Iskra reminded him.
"I left for the fire nation, I had to convince myself I was doing the right thing and that the fire nation was good," Zuko looked at her again. "So I thought of you."
Her eyes skimmed over his, unable to look away. Feelings washed through her rapidly, crashing amongst her mind whilst he smiled.
"I looked for you."
"What?"
"At first, I didn't look for the avatar," He explained. "I looked for you."
"What made you stop?" Iskra wondered.
"I had found you, in Omashu," Zuko said. "You were homeless and struggling for food but I'd never seen you more happy, more free."
Remembrance of the starting journey and being alone washed over her. Reminders of the struggle, the pain, the loneliness.
"My uncle and I left you food, in the alley you slept in," Zuko whispered.
"That was you?" A soft gasp left her lips at the connection.
"I had to make sure you were okay before I returned again."
"Did you return?"
"No, I couldn't."
"Why not?" Iskra wasn't mad, more curious.
"My father found about out about my visit to Omashu, I told him it was a dead end but if I returned, he would've known and come looking," Zuko sighed. "I couldn't let you get captured again."
