My eyes slowly opened. It was bright. Too bright. I tried to get up but it hurt. Like, a lot. I don’t even remember what happened before I got here, except for… Braedon. Where is he… I then heard people talking, though I couldn't see who they were… they sounded familiar…
“Ngh…” I moved in pain as I tried to get out of the bed I was in, but I couldn't for two reasons: one, it was very painful, but two, someone was holding me down.
“Rory, you're not supposed to get out of bed yet!” A familiar voice squealed.
“I know you… right?” I asked, my voice raspy.
“Rory, brother, are you feeling okay? It’s me, Lorelei Pines, your sister?” Wait, Lorelei, she's my sister…?
“Lori, what happened…?” She looked over her shoulder, to Braedon. “Braedon…?” I whispered.
“Yeah, I’m here…” He whispered back. Like if he spoke too loud, I’d just, well, break. I opened my arm and they both hugged me, Lorelei hugging my right and Braedon hugging my left. “Rory, you scared everyone, y’know!” Braedon scolded, as if it was my fault.
“Brae, what even happened?” I asked Braedon, who just sighed.
“Well, the teacher was talking and everyone was paying attention and whatnot. Then, suddenly, there was a thud, and the teacher fell silent. I looked over, and boom, your head was just laying on your desk. Mrs. Martin told me to shake you, because she thought you just fell asleep. So I did, I gently shook you. No response. I shook you again, except harder, since you didn’t wake up the first time. Still no response. By this point, everyone was panicking, including me.” He was then cut off by Lorelei.
“Hold on. Okay. So, Rory, do you have a clue on what happened? Because this isn’t normal, correct?” I nodded.
“Correct. But, I don’t know why it happened. Braedon. Please keep talking about what happened earlier, then I’ll explain what I saw when I passed out.” They both looked worried, but Braedon nodded.
“Alright… Well…
“Then we realized you were unconscious, Mrs. Martin quickly called 911, then told me to get you on the ground, so I did. She then started giving you CPR on you because your heart stopped beating. Just like, stopped. Your body didn’t give any warnings. One moment, alive but unconscious, and the next, unresponsive. Dead. Oh God, Rory, you scared the hell out of literally everyone! Especially me!” He yelled, tears forming in his eyes.
“Brae, listen-”
“No, you listen to me, you little-” He paused, then sighed. “Just let me continue.” I nodded, signaling for him to do so. “When Mrs. Martin did CPR, well, it was terrifying… She was pushing so deep into your chest and kids were screaming, panicking and whatnot, except me. I was on the phone with 911, because Mrs. Martin gave me the phone before she started performing CPR. So I’m on the phone with an officer, internally panicking as others are externally panicking and the teacher is performing CPR on my best friend!” He exclaimed, now up and pacing around the room, making exaggerated hand gestures as he talked.
“Wait, wait, wait, hold on.” Braedon stopped moving and talking, just staring at me instead. “You think of me as your best friend?” I asked. His eyes widened and his cheeks flushed.
“Well, um… I guess that’s what I think of you…” He mumbled under his breath.
