13 AUGUST, 2006. ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN.
"Baba?" I knock on the door and enter inside the room.
My father sat by his arm chair by the window and my mother sat opposite to him on a couch.
My mother gives me an encouraging nod and I slowly approach my father.
"Baba." I call him again, this time he looks at me.
The look of betrayal on his face slashes deep in my heart, making my breath out unevenly.
I sit by his legs and place my hand on his knees. "Will you please hear me, baba?"
He looks at my mother and nods. "Say what you have to."
"Baba he is a nice man." I say. "You know I wouldn't have fought for him if I hadn't known his nature. He is a nice man."
"You think he is?" He asks.
I nod. "I know he is."
He reaches out and grabs my hand on his knee. "Then I trust my daughter."
Tears fall down my eyes and I rest my head on his knee. "Thank you for understanding me, baba. Thank you so much. Thank you."
"Call him here." Ammi suggests.
I wipe my tears. "I don't have my phone. Raza bhai threw it out of the window."
"I'll get you a new one." Baba pats my head. "Give me his number, I'll talk to him."
I nod eagerly. "Yes baba, please do."
Baba moves away the strands from my face. "You really love him."
I grab his hand. "Once you meet him you'll understand how nice he is."
"We are with you, Manar." Ammi kisses on top of my head. "If we out of all people don't understand you, then there will be no difference between us and the world."
"But Raza bhai...."
"I will make him understand, don't worry about him." Baba says. "As long as your parents are alive, you, my daughter, will receive all the happiness of this world."
"Thank you, thank you so much baba." I kiss his hand. "I promise I won't disappoint you."
A house help knocks on the door with land line in her hand. "There is a call for you Manar bibi."
My breath hitches. Is it Mahib? But I told him to contact me on landline number only if it's urgent.
I look back at my parents and they give me a nod.
I stand up on my unsteady legs and take the phone from her hand.
"Hello?"
"Salam Manar, I am Sheherzad. Mahib's sister. He told me to inform you that he is coming tomorrow. I would come alone with him to ask your hand from your parents."
