I knock on the door before entering inside.

Mahib looks up from the computer and gives me a smile.

I walk towards his desk and place the shopping bag in front of him.

He frowns looking at it. "What's that?"

I fold my hands. "Why did you bought that toy for Noor?"

His eyes gain recognition and he stands up from the chair. "Ms. Manar, look I just wanted to—"

"What Mr. Mahib?" I ask. "Did you wanted to show that you can pay for such small things and I can't?"

"What? No! Manar that wasn't my intention—" he rushes to explain.

"Your intentions might not been that but it gave me that impression." I blink back my tears. "Mr. Mahib I went to shopping because I earned my hard earned money for the first time and I wanted to buy things for my daughter with the money I earned."

"I..." he pinches the bridge of his nose. "I am sorry, it was never my intention to hurt you. I am just habituated to buy those things to my nephews when my sister denies it so I thought I could do that to Noor too."

"You do that for your nephews. Noor is nothing to you." I say, making sure my tone is harsh. Because that's what's best for us. I was once habituated by him, his presence and was left heart broken, I don't want Noor to experience the same.

His blue eyes loses their light for a second and he looks down, nodding. "I apologise, I over stepped my boundaries."

His words felt like a blow to me but I held my head up high. "Mr. Mahib, I don't doubt on your intentions, you are a good human, but just respect the fact that whatever I am doing it for my daughter, I am doing it for the first time." Words lodge in my throat, my vision getting blurry. "I was never independent. Now I am trying very hard to be, so please respect that."

"I will." He says, not making eye contact with me. "Again, I am sorry."

I nod, discreetly wiping the corner of my eye. "Please return it back." I point at the shopping bag and walk towards the door.

"There is a meeting I want you to join in." Mahib says, I look over my shoulder to see him now going back to sit on his desk, still not meeting his eyes with mine. "It will be useful for you."

I nod. "Thank you."

Exiting his office, I go my desk and hold my head in my hands.

It wasn't a big thing which he did. He just brought Noor a stuffed toy. But yesterday was all about me. Me earning money and spending it on my daughter. I had already brought too many clothes for Noor. I can't spend all of my salary on unnecessary items.

As a mother, it broke my heart when I couldn't get a thing my daughter wanted. But I am taking one step at a time. I have just started earning, I will start saving money and when I have enough to spend on whatever Noor keeps her hand on, that day I will consider myself a successful mother.
