"So the reason you didn't want Light here... was because you think he murdered Rin?" (Y/N) blinked at L in disbelief, having not even known that the boy was missing at all until just then. "That's... I mean... how did you even come to this conclusion?"

"It's quite simple, really," L started as he graciously took a cup of coffee that Watari had brought in, adding more than enough sugar cubes to the dark liquid that made a small plopping sound when hitting the drink's surface. "Since I've met you, you've always had keen observation skills, yet it seems that even with your competent skill set, you're still inept to what's right in front of you."

"I'm sorry? What do you mean by that?" She countered, slightly offended by his words.

"What I mean is that your friendship with Light has blinded you to many things about your relationship—including his jealousy towards Nakashima Rin," L concluded, watching as her expression didn't change, a factor that made him wonder if she already knew. "It's a weak motive—jealousy, that is—but if stoked long enough, can turn into a lethal weapon."

"And you think Light's jealousy twisted to the point where he acted out on his emotions and killed Rin?" (Y/N) scoffed at the absurdity.

"Precisely."

Her brows furrowed.

What is going on?

Murdering someone like that isn't Light's style—he wouldn't expose himself like that.

What am I missing?

"The police were the ones that finally found him," L further commented with a slurp of his drink. "Well... some of him."

The horrifying meaning of his words easily sank in. (Y/N) felt her whole body ice over, the thought of someone that she had known, had seen alive breathing, speaking, smiling, now dead twisting knots in her stomach—it wasn't a pleasant feeling. And it was a feeling that she never wanted to experience ever again.

"The police first found traces of Nakashima's blood in a nearby alleyway where he worked," L continued, paying no heed to the girl's obvious discomfort it seemed. "Following the scattered trail, they found his body cut up and strewn about in the woods. The pictures they collected were quite gruesome."

"Could I... see the pictures you mentioned?" (Y/N) requested tentatively, swallowing thickly.

"Yes. I thought you'd ask that," L agreed, reaching beside him to pull from a filing drawer a thick folder before handing it over.

She immediately wanted to throw up.

    You...

You can't even tell this was once a person!

Dried blood coated the greenery of the small open field where Rin's body had been found, his skin hanging like a tapestry on one of the nearby trees, teeth hung like a necklace on another. Neatly cut squares of his body were placed in circles, arms and legs pointing towards the middle where his head sat on a pike, his eyes and tongue ripped from their original places.

She placed a hand over her mouth.

What the actual hell?

"This isn't... natural," she finally voiced after getting over her disgust, closing the folder and setting it far away from her. "This is the work of someone truly set apart from society. Something like this... it requires time and patience. It requires skill and an iron will to completely mutilate a person to this degree. This is not the work of a random murderer. The person who killed Rin knew him, otherwise they wouldn't have gone to such lengths to display his body this... gruesomely."

"I know," L stated plainly as he finished off the last of his coffee. "And I knew you'd reach the same conclusion as I. However, like I mentioned previously, your awareness may have... keened."

"Why do you think it's Light?" She crossed her arms, eyes narrowing. "Don't bullshit me, L."

"You're missing the bigger picture here. Your... friend had a single bullet wound, yet it did not kill him, instead paralyzing him from the waist down," L explained, his jaw tightening when enunciating the word 'friend,' ignoring her question and pointing to a picture where his body was painstakingly pieced together. "He died from torture—a crime of pure, unadulterated hatred."

"That doesn't explain why Light did this," she exhaled, rubbing her temples. "As far as I know, Light liked him as a friend."

    "Not particularly..."

"What do you mean by that?"

"I've already told you," L murmured, his dark eyes boring into (Y/N)'s own (E/C) ones. "Light killed Nakashima Rin for one reason, and one reason only: because he was getting far too close to you. That's all there is to it, really."

The very moment the words left the L's lips, (Y/N) felt something almost akin to amusement—maybe disbelief—since she knew that Light would, in fact, be capable of such a deed. She knew that his character from the show manipulated and abused both people and the power that he had, but only ever as Kira. However, only by Kira would he ever do such a thing, and currently, he had no memories of ever being the famed serial killer.

It couldn't be him.

More so, she didn't want to believe it was him.

"Actually, there is more to it," L mumbled as he cupped his chin. "After observing Light for quite some time now, I have come to a simple conclusion for his actions that are so obvious to anyone save the direct person involved—which is you, in this instance, (Y/N)."

"And that would be?" She exhaled softly.

"Yagami Light is in love with you."

The laugh that burst forth from (Y/N) actually made L flinch ever so slightly, the action basically invisible to the eye, yet still there. It wasn't so much that he was startled, but more curious as to why she was laughing in such a situation. And as he stared at her, he could see that the pure mirth radiating from her only stemmed from disbelief.

"That is quite the deduction you've come up with," she smirked.

She never denied it.

L's eyes narrowed.

"It seems you do not believe me," he then observed, pressing his thumb to his lip whilst tilting his head. "Why is that?"

"Why? It's not even something to be considered," (Y/N) explained vaguely as she crossed her legs and propped her head up. "But pray tell... what does that have to do with Rin's death?"

    "Absolutely everything."
