「 Present 」He's dead.
Shaking her head, (Y/N) unsteadily stood to her feet whilst having to use the couch as support, just staring down at Teru's fallen body.
I can't believe it.
No...
I can believe it, but I'm wondering how?
How did this happen?
Running her fingers through her messy (H/C) hair, she then glanced up when seeing Rem materialize through the wall, her Death Note clutched in her skeletal hand. Ryuk, strangely enough, was nowhere to be found, having left sometime in the middle of her talk with Teru. She didn't think too much on this fact, instead gnawing nervously on the cuticle of her thumb before glancing up at the female Shinigami.
"Did you... kill him?" (Y/N) asked Rem hesitantly, wishing for relief to fill her when she shook her head, however the feeling not coming.
Someone did, though.
Someone with a Death Note.
As a though glanced through her mind, her eyes widened as she placed a hand over her mouth, shock radiating through her body when knowing exactly who killed Teru. She grit her teeth at the realization that came all too late for her liking.
Light's regained his memories.
Considering how Ryuk disappeared despite wanting to be entertained, this has to be true. I don't know how, and I don't care, but all that matters is what he's going to do now.
Because he knows everything.
"Light's memories have been restored," (Y/N) let out a deep breath as she then licked eyes with Rem, the (E/C) hues shining with a type of cold resolution. "He must have found Ryuk's notebook that I hid under the floorboards of my house. How, though... I'm not sure. And it doesn't matter anymore. If we want Misa to stay safe, I will need to take possession of your notebook."
"Why?"
"Huh?" (Y/N) blinked at the Shinigami in surprise.
The God's skeletal form deflated as she exhaled, walking closer and pointing a clawed finger at the girl before saying, "I have trusted you because I have seen just how intellectual you are and how committed you are to making sure that Misa stays safe. But now... the plans that you have so carefully made are now ruined because of a single mistake that you have made."
"How was I supposed to know that Light would break into my home, huh?" (Y/N) scowled, her frown deepening.
"You said you know Light's character," Rem shook her head. "You should have known."
"Rem... if I don't have your notebook, I will lose everything—forget everything," (Y/N) spoke in a low tone as she continued to glower at the Shinigami, her fingers curling into tight fists at her side. "If Light hides Ryuk's notebook and I don't find it within a little more than a year, all of my memories will be gone. If that happens, Misa will die. And we both know you'd do absolutely anything to avoid that."
The air stilled as the two merely stared at each other, the tension running high.
The seconds ticked by.
Finally, Rem spoke.
"(L/N)(Y/N)... every time I want to dissuade myself from trusting you, I fail," the God of Death began, moving away from said girl to look out the window, the buildings lit up in contrast to the night sky. "I have never met a human like you before—someone who tries so hard to fight for the future she wants. You're correct in knowing that if you lose one of my or Ryuk's Death Note, you will lose your memories. And you're correct in knowing I will do anything to prevent Misa's death. That is the only reason that I am allowing you further ownership of my Death Note."
"Thank you... Rem," (Y/N) nodded stoically, watching as the journal fell to the ground, once more becoming a part of the human realm.
Picking the notebook up and tucking it into the hem of her pants before pulling her shirt over the cover, she then knelt down to close Teru's eyes. Conflicting emotions crossed her expression as she did so, not lingering a moment longer as she exited the apartment and shut the door behind her. It wasn't long before she reached Headquarters, and after riding the elevator up with the bell dinging to signal that the doors were sliding open, she could only feel her eyes narrow when meeting Light's own—they were dark, darker than normal, and darker than she would have liked.
And as he smiled at her, the look full of adoration and obsession and one that she had gotten used to, her gaze merely flicked behind to to Ryuk his cackling the only thing she could properly hear at the moment.
So it's true.
It wasn't just my meaningless speculation.
He stole Ryuk's notebook.
"Mikami Teru is dead," (Y/N) then announced to the Task Force, all of them excluding L turning around with wide eyes at the shocking news.
"What? How?" Soichiro exclaimed.
"He died of a heart attack," she stated simply, the only thing she needed to say to let them know that it was Kira, all of them growing quite grim as they processed her words and brooded in silence.
"Then that means... Kira was able to find out we suspected him," Matsuda spoke with wordy lacing his tone, biting the edge of his fingernail in an almost painful way. "But the only thing I'm not sure of is why Kira killed him. I mean, doing that will only let us know that he somehow has access to classified information."
"You're right, Matsuda," L murmured as he stared at the monitors. "But it's simple, really. Mikami Teru was a threat, so Kira got rid of him. That's all."
"A threat?" Light barely hid his smirk. "Why do you suggest that, Ryuzaki?"
"Why, indeed?" The detective hummed.
He didn't elaborate.
And L didn't need to, for everyone in that room knew that no matter what Kira's reasons were, a man was now dead, and the investigation still continued.
