The next day, Taylor settled into her usual spot in the back corner of the cafeteria. It was a small table near the window, offering a bit of respite from the bustling crowd. Selena and Abigail had already arrived, their trays filled with the standard cafeteria fare. Taylor joined them, carrying her own tray and slipping into the seat across from her friends.

Selena, always lively, was mid story about a recent event. "You wouldn't believe what happened yesterday! Jenny caught her boyfriend texting another girl. It was such a mess."

Abigail, with her characteristic curiosity, leaned in. "Really? How did she find out? Was there a huge fight?"

Selena nodded, her expression reflecting the gravity of the situation. "Yeah, she saw the messages when he left his phone unattended. They ended up having a huge argument in the parking lot. It was all anyone could talk about today."

Taylor picked at her food, masking her discomfort with a forced smile, trying to focus on the conversation rather than the uneaten meal in front of her. She listened, nodding along, though her mind wandered. She appreciated the gossip and the camaraderie, but the drama of high school relationships seemed distant compared to her own preoccupations.

Across the cafeteria, the atmosphere shifted as Travis and his friends made their entrance. Their loud laughter and boisterous voices cut through the ambient noise, drawing the attention of students around them. Taylor's heart sank at the sight of Travis. She tried to focus on her food, but the familiar dread settled in her stomach.

Travis's gaze swept across the room, and when it landed on Taylor, a smirk spread across his face. One of his friends nudged him, pointing toward Taylor's table with a smirk. "Hey, Travis, go say hi to our favorite nerd."

Travis's grin widened, and he made his way over with a purposeful stride. The clatter of trays and the murmur of conversations seemed to fade as he approached. Taylor felt her anxiety rise, her hands gripping her fork tightly as if it could shield her from the impending confrontation.

Travis's towering figure loomed over their table, and his smirk was unmistakable. "Well, well, if it isn't the little trio," he sneered. "Looks like someone's been skipping meals. Maybe that's why you're so tiny, Taylor. Shouldn't you be growing a bit more?"

Taylor's face turned red with a mix of embarrassment and anger. She gripped her fork tightly, trying to ignore him. "I'm eating," she said with forced calm, though she pushed the food around on her plate without actually taking a bite.

Travis leaned closer, his eyes glinting with malice. "Seriously, Taylor. Maybe if you spent less time hiding in the corner and more time eating, you wouldn't look so... small. I mean, look at you. You're like a twig."

Before Taylor could respond, Selena's voice cut through the tension. "Travis, that's enough. Why don't you just leave us alone?"

Abigail nodded in agreement. "Yeah, this isn't funny. Just go away."

Travis's grin only widened at their response. "What's the matter? Did the cat eat Taylor's tongue?" He taunted, his voice dripping with mockery.

Taylor felt her frustration boil over. Her face flushed with a deep red, her hands trembling slightly as she tried to maintain her composure. The effort to keep up appearances despite her struggle with food only added to her stress. "Just leave Travis," she said through gritted teeth, trying to keep her voice steady.

Travis shrugged, feigning innocence. "Whatever. Don't let me interrupt your little pity party."

With a final smirk, Travis turned and walked away, his friends snickering behind him. The cafeteria's noise seemed to close in on Taylor as she tried to steady her breathing. Selena and Abigail exchanged worried glances, their conversation once again focused on Taylor.

"Are you okay?" Selena asked softly, her concern evident.

Taylor nodded, though her voice was strained. "Yeah, I'm fine."

Abigail placed a comforting hand on Taylor's arm. "He's such a jerk. Don't let him get to you."

Taylor forced a smile, though it didn't reach her eyes. She tried to focus on her friends and their conversation, but the sting of Travis's taunts lingered, compounded by her internal struggle. The uneaten food on her plate became a silent witness to her frustration and discomfort as she tried to push aside her feelings and join in the conversation.
