Travis stormed into the house, slamming the door behind him. His chest heaved with anger, his fists clenched at his sides. The fight in the hallway with David and Kayla still echoed in his mind, and the humiliation of having it all play out in front of half the school made his blood boil. But what really stung was the call from the school to his father, Ed, who was already waiting in the living room when Travis entered.
Ed stood, his posture stiff and his expression hard. "Do you have any idea what you've done?" he barked as soon as Travis was in sight.
Travis flinched but met his father's gaze, defiant. "They started it," he shot back, his voice shaking with barely contained rage. "I was just defending myself."
"Defending yourself?" Ed's voice rose. "You think that justifies making a scene in front of everyone? You're on thin ice, Travis. The school is watching you, and this is how you behave?"
Travis's frustration boiled over. "What was I supposed to do, Dad? Let them humiliate me? Let them humiliate Taylor?" His voice cracked on her name, the protective instinct flaring up again.
Ed's eyes narrowed, and he took a step closer, his presence towering and intimidating. "You were supposed to keep your head down, stay out of trouble. But you can't do that, can you? Always making things worse."
"Maybe if you weren't always breathing down my neck—" Travis began, but he was cut off by Ed's sharp glare.
"Don't you dare," Ed growled. "You're acting like a child, Travis. This behavior is unacceptable."
Travis's hands shook as he tried to hold back tears of frustration. "I'm not a child! And I'm not going to let people walk all over me, or Taylor."
Ed's face softened slightly at the mention of Taylor, but only for a moment. "This isn't just about you, Travis. You need to think before you act. There are consequences to your actions."
Before Travis could respond, the front door creaked open, and a familiar voice filled the room. "Well, this is a warm welcome."
Both Ed and Travis turned, eyes wide in shock. There, standing in the doorway, was Jason, Travis's older brother. His hair was a bit longer, and he had the tired look of someone who had been on the road for hours, but his grin was as bright as ever.
"Jason?" Travis's voice was incredulous, his anger momentarily forgotten as he took in the sight of his brother. Without hesitation, he crossed the room and pulled Jason into a tight hug. "What are you doing here?"
Jason chuckled, returning the hug just as fiercely. "Surprise visit," he said, ruffling Travis's hair. "Thought I'd drop in and see how my little brother's doing." He glanced over Travis's shoulder at Ed, who was standing frozen in place. "Though it seems like I walked in on something. You two were at each other's throats, huh?"
Travis pulled back, his face flushed with a mix of embarrassment and relief. "Yeah, well, it's been a rough day," he mumbled, stepping aside so Jason could face Ed.
Ed's stern expression softened just slightly at the sight of his eldest son. "Jason," he said, his voice thick with emotion. He approached slowly, almost as if he couldn't believe Jason was actually there, and then he pulled him into a quick, stiff embrace. "It's good to see you, son."
Jason patted Ed on the back, sensing the tension in the room. "Good to see you too, Dad." He stepped back, glancing between his father and brother. "So, what's going on here? I couldn't help but overhear some pretty heated words."
Travis's face darkened again, his earlier frustration bubbling back up. "Dad thinks I'm screwing up again," he muttered.
Ed sighed, rubbing a hand over his face. "The school called," he explained to Jason, his voice weary. "They said Travis was involved in a fight in the hallway. Apparently, he was causing a scene."
Jason raised an eyebrow, looking at Travis with curiosity. "A fight? That doesn't sound like you." His tone was light, but there was an underlying concern.
Travis crossed his arms, defensive. "It wasn't like that. David, this guy at school, was trying to mess with Taylor. I couldn't just stand by and do nothing."
Jason's brow furrowed in confusion. "Wait, who's Taylor?" he asked, clearly puzzled.
Travis fumbled for words, not sure if he should disclose too much. "She's... um, she's someone I care about," he said, his voice wavering.
Before Travis could elaborate further, Ed chimed in, his tone a mix of resignation and mild annoyance. "Travis's girlfriend," he said, matter of factly.
Travis's head whipped around to look at his father, his eyes wide with shock. "How did you know?" he asked, disbelief coloring his voice.
Ed raised an eyebrow, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. "Travis, I wasn't born yesterday. No one gets that worked up over just a friend," he said, his voice softening. "It's pretty obvious."
Jason's eyes widened in realization, and he chuckled. "Oh my," he said, teasingly. "Looks like my little brother's been keeping secrets. A girlfriend, huh?"
Travis rolled his eyes but couldn't hide the faint blush creeping up his cheeks. "Yeah, well, things are complicated."
Jason's eyes softened as he looked at his brother. "You did what you had to do," he said gently, placing a reassuring hand on Travis's shoulder. "But you know Dad worries. You've got to be smart about this stuff."
Travis sighed, his shoulders slumping. "I know," he admitted quietly. "I just— I couldn't let them get away with it."
Ed's stern gaze softened further as he listened to the exchange between his sons. He stepped forward, placing a hand on Travis's other shoulder. "I just don't want to see you get hurt," he said, his voice rough with emotion. "Or do something you'll regret."
Travis looked between his father and brother, feeling a mix of emotions, relief at Jason's support, frustration at the situation, and an underlying sadness at the strained relationship with his dad. "I get it, Dad," he said finally, his voice low. "But I'm not a kid anymore. I need to handle things my way sometimes."
Jason squeezed his shoulder, offering a supportive smile. "And we're here to help you with that. Just remember, you don't have to do it all on your own."
Ed nodded, though his expression was still laced with concern. "We'll figure it out," he said, more to himself than to Travis.
Jason cleared his throat, trying to lighten the mood. "How about we take a break from all this drama and catch up? I've got stories from college that'll make you forget all about today's nonsense."
Travis managed a small smile, the tension in his chest easing just a little. "That sounds good."
Ed gave a rare, small smile as well. "I think we could all use a break."
As the three of them moved towards the living room, the earlier conflict still hung in the air, but with Jason's return, there was a sense of hope, a chance to heal, to reconnect, and to face whatever came next together.
